There are a few different brands of oil filter out there for our motors, Genuine/OEM, Mann, Mahle, Britpart, Crosland, Bosch, Fram and I'm sure I've missed a few.
Whats your preference, cheapest? Dearest? Or do you just pick up the first one listed? Do you have a preferred brand? Have you ever taken your old one apart to see whats in it?

Cooper Fram or Mahle unless the genuine are on offer.

Fuel filters are best to buy dear ones, I found cheap ones are inferior.
 
My engine has a canister you open and literally take out the filter bit, so there’s no bull****ing what’s in there.
Blueprint I find cheap and tidy.

I like being able to see what you're getting.
I've seen YouTube videos where folks take me filters to bits. The difference between some is astounding,
 
I wouldn't touch Fram or Donaldson filters with your bargepole ..

Had a Fram "filter" delivered for a machine - felt like there was nothing in the box, so I weighed the filter - 280grams ...

There was some garbage on the box about the filter within being a silver standard one or some such - good for 95% filtration of > 25 microns or thereabouts .... IOW, IMHO, absolute crap.

Then I got a genuine one - 700 grams :eek::eek::eek: ....

Also, got a Donaldson for a Perkins engine - it was lacking the non return valve, and the big ends were knocking merrily till the pump refilled the filter! Again, Genuine filter, and no more knocking !! (FFS!!!!)

as you mentioned, genuine are less than a tenner, so daft not too IMO. OEM are fine too - both D1's here are using Mahle without issue...

I cut mine open to check for quality defects, i did run MANN in the Jag and P38 however after cutting them both open i've discovered the Bosch is superior..

Mann use a leaf relief spring, and Bosch uses a coil spring..
The Bosch also had more outlets in the cap of the filter..

Oh and the bosch canister was thicker, I can crush the cannister of a Mann filter in my hand, whereas the Bosch is studier!
Or it could be i'm an ape!! ;)

Another thing of note is the pleats on the Mann were quite mushy whereas the Bosch were much firmer...

Amazing...

I also always think of how different oil manufacturers compare

Know where all very fussy when it comes to our landies , but some may just go if it has the correct grade on the side of the bottom that will do

last year , used millers engine oil and mahle engine filter cost me around £70

but at the end of the day I must spend just under £200 on all oils and filters each year but seeing a new engine for mine is around £6-7k

however I think as the landy gets newer the oils and filters become even more apparent
 
I like this thread a lot.

Some say im excessive but I change the air, engine oil + filters every 6k. The rest changed every 12k fuel filter yearly.

am the same , only done a few hundred miles and still changed everything , always weigh it up, of a few hundred quid to a new engine of some £6-7k
 
As vehicles and engines in particular age regular maintenance/oil change gets more important.
I'm not going to try and save a few £££ and gamble many £££ on a part/full engine rebuild.
That said i don't see the point in spending double just for a brand name

Not just a name ;)

Look up at the Datasheets and compare different oils ;)

You'd be surprised that going for a "brand" can be beneficial ;)
 
Considering I change so often tend to go for Halfords own 10w/40 semi as advised by Gigglepin

The rest I use Smith n Allan

None of my TD5s have liked fully synth, always leaked after a change. Semi theyre fine hmmmm
