Engine Malfunction Warning Light

Hi
The amber engine malfunction light (with exclamation mark) has come on on my 2005 Freelander coupled with a loss of power. The handbook talks about the engine management system and advises seeking immediate qualified help, but is otherwise not very specific. Can anybody suggest possible causes and remedies?

plug it in n read the codes, 2005 should be OBD, so easy to get a cheap reader, or plenty of folk with em.

Thanks Timtheenchanteruk; it turned out to be the fuel pump which I had replaced and all seems well now touch wood.
