12J at the beginning makes me think you've got a 12J which is the 2.5 N/A. What year is your landy, or what reg is it? Can you physically see the turbo bolted onto the side of the head?

that's gonna really **** him off if he was expecting it to be a 300

am just jealous of where he lives

ok guys its defo a 300 tdi and im reading it of v5 ive had the defender 90 for 3 years it was rebuilt onto a 1985 chassis i know its usually the other way round lol any way im going to be selling soon as im moving up to a 110 td5 ex utility but i need to know the age of the defender that was put onto chassis obviously it will be from 1995 on wards and yes arran a great place to live i dont even have to lock my defender at night!!!!!!!

Age of the engine is usually irrelevent when selling ye traccta. just do what everyone else does and sell it as an 1985 90 with a 300tdi conversion. As it's the chassis age that defines the age of the vehicle. and they are unlikely to have done a complete chassis up rebuild. In fact the likeliest source for your engine will have been a discovery anyway.

ok it would appear after checking my last nine mots that it is in fact 1984 chassis and body as the chassis and vin numbers are the same,on the original mots, well you could have fooled me as the chassis and bodywork are perfect, alought i no it had new doors all round when it was resprayed and it has all the 300tdi running gear axles transfer box/r380 gear box and when ordering parts i always got 300tdi and they fit,so was there any difference between disco and defender 300 tdi? also when i put my personal number on it the guy from dvla came and checked it so it must be right, just engine i need to know what thats from?
cheers gus

A 300tdi engine should start with 16 - so I trust you did read this from the V5.

I would be getting the V5 engine no. to match up with the engine fitted. If plod stops you and decides to do some checks with there little roadside VOSA crew they may start asking questions you may struggle to answer.

Phone the DVLA up, tell them that your engine was replaced (don't mention any changes or anything just a new serial no. for the engine) and they will change it. When i did mine I told them it was also a Diesel (had been changed from a Petrol the first time the engine was swapped) and it was not a problem. Also means it ties up for insurance purposes. I think you can get away with the V5 just saying 4 cylinder heavy fuel oil for the type. No lies being told here, it just doesnt mention a turbo. I would however make sure your ins. company know it has a turbo if it was the 12J originally fitted which was NA. Oh and don't tell them it was changed, just say it has the LR TD engine in it and as they must have looked at the V5 to get the details it is not correct. Act daft, say you didn't know it had a turbo.

cheers,ok will check engine number and change it,on the mot from the year i put my personal plate on it states that it was checked by vosa signed by the guy how done it and dated so everthing must be ok

I would not jump to that conclusion so quickly although I know nowadays it is very possible unfortunately and it is a good idea to assume the worst or you might end up loosing something when the police seize it.

If I sold mine to someone they would also find the engine numbers don't match up (not updated it AGAIN since the new engine was fitted), but there is not anything wrong with it. The Disco was bought and stripped for parts. It probably would be possible to trace the engine to the original Disco and prove that’s where my engine came from.

ok ive been in touch with last owner, just to remind myself what he told me whan i bought it,all mechanics engine/gearbox/axles etc are from his 300tdi defender that he rolled and fitted to this 1984 chassis/body and changed as much as possible to make it like a 300 tdi,for some reason the engine number still comes up as 2.5 na,and as i pointed out it has been checked by vosa/dvla when i changed the reg plates and that was 3 years ago and nothing was said then,so nothing dodgy im pleased to say
