Engine ident

Thought I had already sent this questions but doesn't appear to have gone through so here it goes again.

I am thinking of entering the world of S1 ownership. The machine in question is a well knackered and needs a complete restoration. Can anyone tell me how I can tell the difference between the 2 ltr and 1.6 petrols just by looking at them - not seen one in the flesh before. Also anyone know at what date the grill went from covering the head lights to series 2 inverted T shape type.


Any light you can shed would be highly appriciated.
