Mi wheeled engine lift has gone knacked, I've stripped cleaned and rebuilt it, it still lowers the engine slowy all the time, not much use when your trying to weld up mount brackets.
I have an article from practical classics on how to build your own lift from a few bits of scrap box and a 4 tonne bottle jack, has anyone actually made one of these and did it work ok.
I was thinking of removing the hydraulic cylinder arrangement of mine, making some brackets and fitting a bottle jack like the practical classics project, shouldnt be so hard starting with the frame ready made.

Its a thingy whatsit.

Well I remember it on the farm 20 years ago, and then it had been aquired from a plant that had used it regullarly to change tool heads on a cow feed pelleter, so its done a lot, I've had it 10 years and wellied it.
Theres no makers name or plate on it, I've enquired with one of the hydraulics suppliers here and they said no.
I replaced the pump seals with standard parker cylinder seals and all the 'o' rings, but the main cylinder seal looks made for the job, so I've given up with it.
A bottle jack with some brackets welded up sounds like a good replacement for its main cylinder and very cost effective, just wondered if they were good to use.
This is one seem blokes made, looks rough unpainted but works, heres the pratical classic article http://locost7.info/files/tools/Hoist+-+Practical+Classics.zip

If I was that wise I wouldnt want to be driving round in a knacked out 30 year old landy now would I, I'd go a buy a new'un.
I'm just as likely to be claimed against for putting a disco engine in a series, where do you draw the line?.
Advice accepted though over the cylinder, I spend a reasonable amount with one of our suppliers and have had favours before, so I'll try to pull another first, then its bottle jack treatment.
Hired one a couple of times like yours gspot, think it was a sealey, I've a diff and a box for that sierra if you ever need em.

That thing is bigger than mi garage, we had one of them like that at the pleasure beach, good tool, and your not askin to much, but sorry mate not what I need.

thats not actualy mine its just a pick av found on the net,av just bought two of em.rekon thi about 10ft tall n 10ft wide.i only wanted one fa mi sen but i bought both of em.av got two 3 phase hoists that come wi em.its a dam shame thi 3 phase, wish thi ad bin 110 or 240!

Jimbot, if the 3 phase motors in your winch are less than 2 kw, if you look on ebay you can get variable speed 3 phase output drives than take single phase 240 as the input.
If you reconnected the windings in the motor from star to delta which isnt hard you'll be able to run them from a 3 pin domestic plug with one of these, I ran a mig weld set like this till I could afford another.

Ta.

And you guys are taking the mick out of me with mi jack idea, looking at that bit of angle with a bent over bolt holding it up to the block, that doesnt look at all safe, are all landy owners as dangerous as us.
