good call - no it doesn't come on when turning on ignition.
So you suspecting the power for at least part of the ecu comes via the sensor and the fault is maybe further up the loom (or in ecu) when the sensor is connected

We need someone with a 1.8 petrol to confirm their engine management lamp illuminates when the ignition is turned on. It did on my v6. I would eggspect it to on others.
I wonder if yer LED has been covered or damaged to stop it working to hide a fault, if it should illuminate and doesn't.

I have had vehicle from new, engine light deffo came on then went off on engine start before this fault, never noticed what is was doing when the fault was can only say it does not come on with ignition on and lambda disconnected

It does on my 1.8 facelift. It also stays on as it's detected a fault with the cam sensor.

Nodge,
tried connecting the sensor and JUST turning ignition on, no engine light, hooked up new sensor held it clear of body turned on ignition No engine light, started eng, turned off restarted engine ok ie fuse no longer blowing.
Will have it fitted tomorrow and they will check if bulb has gone or is there an ecu related problem.
I honestly can't recall when it stopped coming on I just check all of them have gone off, could be a totally different unrelated fault.
The electrics guy is on hols till 5/11, will go into modules and fix them iff possible

That's good then. So at least you know the new O2 sensor will solve the blowing fuse issue.
The MIL is an LED, which don't normally blow. However someone might have messed with it, although as you've been the only owner, that's unlikely.

an update
They took the binnacle off there is no bulb holder or wire behind the engine management "logo"? checked rave cd they are right, it is on diesel only at that point in time, manual in car agrees.
Lord knows what I thought I was seeing for all those years., highly embarrassing to admit it.

Ok got landy and old sensor back, buzzed out the old sensor short to earth from the GREY wire???
Gave it a good moving and shaking now
Both white shorted & grey to earth and obviously to each other

Thank you for the pic - I have been suffering the same problem intermittently for the past couple of months in my 2005 TD4, turn key, dash lights up but no crank. Thanks to the picture I was able to get under the car and find where the connector was in seconds. My connector was only half on the spade and the spade was covered with white fuzz. Cleaned it all off and haven't had the problem since! ta!
