Engine difficult to start

Hi, New to the forum but here goes.

Have a 2004 Disco TD5 Auto and it has suddenly developed a starting problem! Used to start first turn of the key, then suddenly wouldn't start at all. Did eventually start it with a jump start after lots of winding.

I though it may be a fueling problem as even though it takes a while for it to catch, i don't get clouds of diesel smoke.

I have changed the fuel pump, the injector harness and cleaned out the ECU connectors of oil but still no luck!

When it does eventually cough into life, it misses sometimes and sometimes it seems to miss on tickover and then die!

I know this could be any one of a thousand things, but any pointers anyone could give me would be great - only ever had to work on my 300 before!

Hi, try first to change the air bleed valve(WJN500110) in the wheel side rear port of the filter head then give it a purge: ignition on II, fully depress consecutevely the throttle(about 5 times) untill the MIL warning starts flashing then wait untill it stops then crank...if that doesnt help next move would be the injector washers and seals
 
Might sound silly but battery fully charge. And is starter ok.might be a bit lazy so will struggle my 300 was like this and i changed loads on fuel side to find out starter was lazy
 
Thanks for the advice. Already changed the battery though and it flies over on the starter, just won't fire. Cheers
 
Thanks Sierraferry. Already tried a purge, but didn't know about the valve. Is that the plastic one on the bottom of the filter or somewhere else?
 
If the ECU connector was full of oil the rest of that loom and the ECU may be contaminated - best case clean the inside of the ECU, worst case new ECU and engine wiring loom.
 
I'm in the process of replacing the seals on the injectors and keep finding different information about the rocker shaft!

Do I need to replace the securing bolts that go into the cylinder head, or the adjuster screws? Different people seem to be saying different things!
 
There are different opinions about what to replace. RAVE says, Rocker shaft bolts adjuster screws and nuts but most people incl me dont replace any. When I asked Turners they said they dont replace them.

Make sure the new O ring seals are well lubed with clean engine oil. And check the mating surface for the fire washers is spotless.

Its a simple job, Discovery2 website is great for a guide.

And double check your injector cam clearances!
