Well, I did have a problem with the ngine cutting out under load...here was my original thread...

http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f8/engine-cutting-out-under-load-found-out-its-snorkel-247810.html

I found out that the intercooler pipe was crushing under load and therefore cutting out the engine. So a few shiney alloy pipes later and all was well.

Well, until the weekend, as I was accelerating up a hill, and yup, she cut out again, off the gas, then back on, all ok, till again, she cuts out, off the gas, and back on with the same happening till we get to the top, then all fine all the way home, including hills

What I did notice is that the Turbo gauge goes into quite a large vacuum when it cuts out, so note sure if this is a tell tale sign of anything??

Anyone got any suggestions, as its driving me batty - have checked and changed all the usual suspects - lift pump etc etc, and just to confirm its a 1996 Auto with flyby throttle etc.

Also I cannot make it happen which is annoying if I was to actually take her to my local guy......

Can a turbo be faulty and not give out full power even though it is boosting at the correct pressure and no blue smoke etc, as its as if the Turbo is stalling??

try loosening the fuel filler cap, before you thrash it next time.Had this on a diesel car where tank breather was blocked and whole fuel tank went under vacuum during hard driving-not obvious on day to day stuff, only when under full load

will give that a go - although I do have a breather kit fitted which includes the fuel line

If the turbo guage is registering a vacuum, it would suggest a restriction in the inlet airflow. Hose section delaminating internally for example.

I have changed all the pipe work from the snorkel top (which I changed from a mushroom to a ram type) to the maf so I know that is all good as its a steel pipe.

I have changed the pipe work to and from the intercooler with steel pipes too.

Only pipe I cannot change is the one from the maf to the inlet as can't seem to find anything to change it with being an auto and all that...has a different pipe. Any idea's where I can get an uprated one from?

This is the only standard pipe i have left...

Could your wastegate be stuck shut ?

I have EDC auto with a stuck wastgate and the ECU cuts the fuel under heavy load. Most noticable going up steep hills at around 3000rpm. It's been on my fix list for over a year and it's about time I fixed it but on the 300tdi it's hard to reach so it's a turbo on the bench fix.

That sounds definitely like the symptoms, so how do you fix a sticking wastegate - oil/grease?

Is it possible to lubricate it in situ?

I can only just reach it with my fingers but no way of getting a good grip even with pliers. I'm resigned to taking the turbo off and attacking it on the bench. Lube and a good wiggle should get it moving but I still don't understand how mine siezed as I've always been a little heavy footed so it shouldn't have sat still for too long.

I'd sort of forgotten about mine so thanks for reminding me !! I might even get my finger out this weekend....

Well it took me a couple of months to motivate myself but I removed my exhaust manifold/turbo and sorted out my seized wastegate. The difference it has made to driving the Disco is amazing, it's been stuck shut for well over a year so it's like having a new car.

With the alternator removed (I was doing the p-gasket) you may be able to get to it but not sure if you can get a spanner or grips on it. A 16mm open ended spanner fits perfectly if you can get the right angle.

I had the turbo on the bench so it was very easy to get moving.

I also removed the whole EGR assembly and the EGR cooling pipes (Jap Import) and fitted a standard 300tdi bottom radiator hose so keep everything neat and tidy.

old hose...

new one...

Finally discovered why that side of the engine and the cylinder head kept getting covered in black crap. Knackered exhaust/inlet gasket.

All sorted now and very happy with the result :)

Nice work ;)

I have changed my setup, and ditched the so called 'performace filter' and fitted a 200 cylinder air box, as that fits nicely onto the snorkel piping with the side exit.

Picked it up for a fiver from Billing, whacked in a new filter for £7.00 and jobs a good one -no more cutting out, and nice and smooth running.

Filter is probably 3 times as big as the one I had in before, so reckon that was my problem.....restricting the air to the MAF and engine.

Plus it now looks more original ;)
