Hi,
Have looked at previous posts, but think this might be different.

My 2.5 dse manual cuts out when hitting the 4000 rev mark. This is usually when pulling a caravan (but not always) and overtaking. The power loss is almost total but we can continue at about 20mph. A lot of black smoke bellows out of the exhaust. I usually stop and rest and or rev substantially which seems to clear it and then we can proceed as normal.

Have been on diagnosis equipment and that showed fuel injector no 2 was faulty so I replaced that but it has not helped this power problem.

Grateful for any advice

Diagnostic cannot tell you injector number 2 is faulty, injector number 4 yes, but not number 2. Could be going into limp home mode due to an overheat situation.

Black smoke indicates overfuelling, is the intercooler clean (been flushed out),are turbo pipes ok because they can split ,delaminate or fold under pressure. And is the map sensor on the fuel filter head ok, air intake sensor under manifold needs checking aswell and thats just to begin with

Echo. Number 4 (the expensive needle lift sensor) should have been replaced.

Need to run live diagnostics to recreate situation with computer plugged in to gain a better idea of whats happening.

Hi,
Thanks for these ideas to look at. Diagnostics interesting. I was definitely told no 2 faulty; leaking. (repaired). Was given 144 fault code.

Also told; no 1 injector - timing. no 3 injector for inspection. (This is the one with the sensor attached on my vehicle). I have the 2.5 BMW diesel engine.

Will look at what you suggest though. Will also try a re-diagnostic session. Had wondered if hoses were involved. Maybe age/wear weakens.

May be difficult to create situation with live diagnostics - can I do this with caravan attached? (maybe don't need to go that far)

Many thanks

The needle lift sensor should be part of number 4 injector, not number 3. If it's fitted to number 3 I'm surprised it runs.
As I said there is no way you can get fault codes from individual injectors other than the needle lift sensor on number 4. It sounds like the garage is bull****ting you.

The diagnostics plug into the socket in the passenger footwell so if you need a caravan attached to recreate the fault then no problem.
