at around 30mph the engine light comes on increase or drop the revs and it flickers out any ideas before it costs me £45 to have it checked at local diagnostic center

If you mean the charging light, it indicates either a bad earth or the brushes need changing, or both.

The light normally comes on when the engine is stopped, the battery voltage is fed through the field coils and to the bulb, thus giving a field boost when you start up.

If it comes on while running, that shows a fault in the field circuit of a back feed into the battery circuit, both of which need attention asap.

Check the brushes first, it's not a bad job, depends on your alternator.

One unusual thing on our own Disco is leaving the fuel filler cap loose, that will bring up the light, there should be a note on the filler cap about it. That 'might' apply only to petrol Disco's, but worth checking.

I'll look at the Rave CD and see what other possibilities exist.
