Engine change on a 2002 l322 range rover

How come the valves are bent? If you are removing the heads to change the gaskets...the timing locking set is expensive, needed to lock the 4 cams in place and also to re-time the VANOS units.
 
Engine is out something serious has happened in no 1 cylinder it has bent valves damaged injector damaged glow plug piston will only travel part way
Found some very small bits in the inlet manifold just before the erg
The turbo looks like it's had something through it exhaust side is slightly marked but inlet side looks clean but the bearing on this side feels like it's got some wear
So I've ordered a reconditioned one here on Monday
So now down to some questions first is it worthwhile bypassing the erg I'm not a fan
And does anyone know where I can get the blead off t piece that goes on top of the injector or do I have to buy the full kit

Engine is in and sounds ok it's on the road tomorrow so I will know if everything is ok then
two things are bugging me now first is the heated mirrors are on all the time is this because the outside temperature sensor is saying minus 40 or is there a switch that I can turn them off and on
Next is there somewhere in the readout that I can check how much power the alternator is producing (2002 td6 ) it seems to be a light

Power or Voltage??

There is a hidden menu in the dash display that can bring on the Battery Voltage reading....as for Amps nope.

As for the heated mirros, I think they are on all the time at a low level, and then come on more when the defrost button on the HeVAC is pressed.
 
Thanks for that went out for a run this morning and it runs nice took it out tonight and on the way back the battery light started to flash at me
The battery was fully charged this morning but when I got home it wouldn't turn the starter so my first thought is the alternator unless someone tells me different
