I'm debating if I want to build an engine from scratch, (new block casing, Pistons etc), maybe 2nd hand ancillaries, if so would a "new" 19j be preferable to a new 12j? I've heard the turbo is more powerful and I'm inclined to build this one as my 90 originally had this motor. All opinions valued. Thanks.

Same question as in the other fred, innit?

tdi would be better but since your truck was 19j id go with that, turbo is noticeably more powerful
They are, but na are nice low stressed engine.
2.5 petrol might be a viable option if he wants the expense of building a new engine.

A 'new' 19J would be a good option and a useful increase of power over the 12J. The 19J gives reasonable performance in a 90- enough for a comfortable cruising speed of around 65. A bit quieter than the tdi engines too. 12J on the other hand is a bit underpowered for day-to-day use in modern traffic.

2.5 petrol is understressed as standard and should last forever. If you're starting from new it should be a good engine to tune and upgrade. With a bit of ingenuity and carburettor witchcraft, I think it would be possible to lightly turbocharge it using the 19J manifolds. A few psi of boost would give it a bit more grunt.

You can not be serious?

Never tried it of course, but as long as the manifolds physically fit it should be possible. No idea whether it would be worthwhile but definitely scope to experiment.

If you want originality, fit a 2.5 na, td or petrol. Any are cheap and practical.
If you want power, V8, Ford V6, TDi, big diesel, conversions for all have been available for decades.
Home turbocharging is quite a lengthy and expensive process for what you might stand to gain! ;)
