just bought a 2.5 diesel engine and box out of a defender, dont know what year, but was really chuffed with my purchase, paid £185.00 off ebay, now the icing on the cake, when i get it home i tried the gear box and it seems to be a five speed box, would this be right? if it is its going in my 2a.

are you using defender transfer box,cos if you do it would be better to alter center diff so that it is 2wd under normal running and 4wd when diff lock selected, your front axle wont like constant drive

defender transfer boxes lt230s have center diff as run 4wd all the time unlike series which are 2wd unless 4wd selected ,when lr made 109 v8 it was 4wd with center diff and had cvs in axle not ujs,you can remove front housing from t/box to access diff and by replacing diff gears wtih a solid block that is only splined to rear output shaft, this makes transfer box 2wd until you select diff lock which makes it 4wd it gives you similar set up to series system selecting diff lock connects diff with front output shaft

it would cost £150 to fix lt230 for series vehicle ,i think ashcrofts do a conversion to fit series t box on 5 speed gear box , i prefer lt230 as you have 4 ratios to choose from and if you fit defender tunnel and floor plates a neat job

been looking at it this morning, and it looks like a big job to change it, so i dont think i will bother, it wouldn't be worth it for the mileage i do in it, i will probably sell it on, anybody interested, ?
