Disco 2 Engine acoustic cover

Hi All
I made some repairs on my car in the past weeks (leaking fuel cooler, cam cover gasket change) and left the engine cover removed to check if all leaks have gone.
As my cover not in the best condition (foam oily and falls in small pieces, oil cap cover vibrates, rubber piece around left fixing bolt loose) I wondering if it is really useful to put it back? Does it have other function than sound insulation?

Hi, when it's cold outside it helps to warm up the engine faster and keeps it warm longer when the engine is stopped so if you do short drives with several short stops you can see a slight difference in consumption over the winter

^ This + those parts are easily replaceable with little money. Noticing how moisture on the bonnet dries quicker in the area directly on top of the engine, I'm inclined to say that the cover provides protection to the paint by containing engine heat, especially when there's no airflow over the bonnet (i.e. the vehicle is not moving). Also, it might help to maintain the engine and external temp differential to a minimum so as to control internal condensation.

Thanks for your comments! I will see what i can renew on it (rubber grommet, foam maybe?), then put it back.

I am prepared to be corrected but I think the original reason for it was to reduce noise from under the bonnet.

No way to find it in hungary, but even you lucky and find one it will be very expensive.
Mine is not that bad, if i can change the rubber gromet and maybe remove the oil filler cover which vibrates and makes noise, it will be fine.

Both items are an easy fix and can be purchased online. Unfortunately the foam, which is the soundproofing barrier, cannot be bought separately from LR shops so you will need to improvise there - just search for fireproof acoustic foam.

Funny enough done my D3 engine cover the other day , all the foam underneath was falling away or turning to dust

Nothing brilliant as I thought it’s only for the engine and just used all my offcuts up , didn’t want to touch the roll as that’s for under the bonnet

Also ordered some split flexible conduit for all the engine looms as the existing just crumbles

That is how mine look like. The foam inside has a very complex shape, different thicknesses from 1 to maybe 30-40mm so even you find good quality material it will have uniform thickness ( let say 10-20mm) so will never have the same fit.
I put it back as it is and change only the robber grommets to avoid vibration.
