"do they work", well yes and no, if your hippo is petrol and after 2001 then yes, if it's diesel and after 2004, then yes, otherwise it may still work, but will only give limited information, can't remember exactly what info at this time, think I did a post on it before.
Hope my politicians answer has helped a bit, lol

Hi there, I've just ordered one of these from fleabay. What software have other peiople used (Android) and what results did you get?

I got 1 for £5 off AliExpress o the off chance people might just have got it wrong and it could talk to my '99. Which of course it didn't. But my mate's Mazda Tribune threw the engine warning light recently and it worked first time on that and the Torque app on Play Store displayed and cleared the code/light very easily. Took about a minute to pair the bluetooth connection, run the app, display the code and clear them.

This thread you have joined is in the Freelander section of the forum. In this instance its the sort of question that spans models, which may be why you went with it (and Freelander types will be much better answering this type of question than rust specialists) - but in case you didn't spot it... well you have now.

Anyway, while you're in here what else can we do for you? Cut? Wash & Blow Dry? Colouring?

I have one of those - it will tell you any fault codes (or at least some) and allow you to clear them - also the MIL light - Mine was a usb one from nj_diagnostics on eBay in 2014 £16 - the screen shows RPM, Speed, Throttle setting but not much else. Other pages don't work on this vehicle (TD4 2005 facelift) See piccy of the laptop alongside my prop revcounters.

I've used one in the past when I had a 2003 petrol. They will read and generally clear all the generic OBDII faults thrown up by the engine but will not communicate with some of the Land Rover specific modules such as the ABS, security system, heating & ventilation etc. I ended up getting the Britpart Lynx system which 'talked' to the whole car.

Pretty much what I found - how much was the Britpart Lynx? - and which model? - DA6431?

Oh - OK - looked them up on Island 4x4 - Single vehicle DA6430 £215 + VAT - additional vehicles circa £125+Vat - full Multivehicle DA6431 £823+Vat - bit more than I paid (;-))

Yes it will work. You can read/ erase codes and get live data from the engine ECU. I use the Torque App on my Android from Play ;)

Sorry, I searched for the gizmo and didn't realise that the thread is in the Freelander forum. I shall sit on the naughty step for an hour this evening as penance for my heinous sin! Looks like people have used Torque rather than OBDScan I'll give that one a go first when the thing arrives

Do you know if that Torque app will work with my USB dongle and laptop or does it have to be a Bluetooth one

Torque is only available for Android I believe - I presume you're running Windows or IOS if you have a laptop. I just checked the Torque app running on my phone and it only allows Bluetooth or Wifi devices - the paid version might allow USB. I don't know if you can get any Android apps to emulate Bluetooth or Wifi over a USB connection.

Yeah - I have drawn a blank on finding a Torque Pro download for Windows on a pc/laptop - pity - I have emailed the developer - if he comes back with anything I'll report back.

ODB Auto Doctor will work with Bluetooth or wifi ELM devices.
Reads error codes, live values etc which is pretty much what Torque does (I have used it a decent amount).

I have downloaded a pc/windows trial version of that - Auto Doctor - I'll have a play - (my laptop didn't have enough memory to run Bluestacks so I could not try Torque Pro on it)
