I know I want one from these......

But is it a 25d or 45d? It's got a 3 bearing series 3 engine, there's whole dizzy or just internal gubbins?

And which coil?

It's currently running like a turd so it's time to chuck some moolah at bobb.

Thanks for any help :)
Been looking into this myself. According to Accuspark, all the distributors are interchangeable, so I was thinking of going with the 45D, although the vehicle would originally have had a 25D.

They also say it will work with the original coil, but work better with the Accuspark red sports coil, so I think I will get one of those too, they are only a bit over a tenner.

I was always against electronic ignition on old cars, preferring the originality of points. That was until I got fed up of cleaning and adjusting the points on my series, I don't remember them being that much trouble on my old cars. Anyway, I opted for the Accuspark module that simply fits in the original distributer. All was well for a while then I began having trouble starting, in fact, the bugger wouldn't start at all. So I replaced the original dizzy for the Accuspark one, not very much money and the thing now starts and runs well. I've kept the original dizzy and refitted the points to it. I wouldn't say the electronic dizzy improves the performance or mpg though.

I do remember them being trouble on my old cars, and especially on motorcycles, I had a Suzuki GT550 that had three sets of points! :(

But the main reason I am going to get one is because of the capacitors, (condensers), which fail for a pastime, and I think are even worse than the old ones.

I am going to go with the Accuspark complete unit as well, can't be bothered fitting new electronics on a worn old unit.

Maybe I was just a lot keener in the 70's and 80's and the points didn't bother me. You are right about modern condensers, they are rubbish.

The survivalist types would say it's also worth hanging onto the original points based distributor as a spare in case of attack with an EMP weapon.

This is designed to cause an electromagnetic pulse that will destroy modern electronics.

The Russians kept vacuum tube based equipment for years after it was otherwise obsolete for exactly that reason.

If that happens, starting my landy will probably be the least of my worries.

Thanks for the offer Phil, but as I'm chasing running issues I've bitten the bullet and bought a new one with a new coil and leads. That way I can start from a base line of things that I know are good.
Thanks once again for the offer though....
No worries....
Back to the shed it goes ;)

hope bobb enjoys having money spent on it

That is possible, but electronic ignition isn't exactly state of the art, it has been available as an aftermarket option for about 50 years, and standard on petrol engines for 30 in most cases.

I was thinking that the upgraded distributor contained a microchip based control unit of some sort. From a little research on google that may not be the case.

Could well be. I don't know anything about microchips, I do know that electronic ignition has been around pretty much as long as I can remember.

Well it's in, still not running great though so I think a replacement fuel tank is next on the list. I'm fairly sure there's plenty of rusty crap in there that's clogging the filter on the pick up pipe once it's being driven.

That is very possible. May be sealant that has been used on the fittings on top of the tank, instead of gaskets.

What carb are you on with that? Solex, Zenith, Weber?
