electrical problems on rough roads(p38 dse)

if i hit a pothole or get a hard jolt i loose all power for split second engine dies abs fault comes up dash lights come on its a complete power loss i have checked all leads all earths fuse box connections etc. any advice would be welcome

i honestly have no idea dont happen too often but im concerned about the day it will stop dead . its the same as if you flicked the key off and back on

I know that this may not be exactly what you want to hear but you're lucky.

You know that it takes a hard jolt to cause the problem so what you need is a friend.
One sits in the driver's seat with the ignition switched on (usually the friend's job and usually requires liquid bribery) then you get a bit of wood or a mallet and you start tapping things. When your friend shouts he's either spilt his boiling hot coffee in his lap or you're getting close.

If you've got to ask why he was holding his coffee you've never tried using the cupholders in a P38 whilst sitting in the driver's seat!

i'd guess on the ignition switch. have you tried turning it off while driving to see if that gives the same symptoms?

yes spud i tried turning off the key steering locked nearly wiped out neighbours wall good idea dogsbody to go tapping hadnt tjought of that

what, you mean you've never freewheeled your rangies, we used freewheel from the top of conor pass the whole way to dingle, and that was before they fixed the road.

BTW I just said switch it off, not pull out the key ;D

hmm runaway rangerover on the conor pass??? i would rather jump from a plane using a plastic bag as a parachute but i agree with spud some pretty mad ideas here as regards road tests

How much crap have you got on your keyring that dangles from yer barrel?

Get rid of weight If ye have a bit on there.

Mines did the same and it was the ignition needed securing.

That actually happend to a mate of mine who was returning in his Ford van early one morning after a clandestine meeting with his other woman. Did not want to wake the house as he crept home, so turned the ignition off around the corner from his house after getting enough speed up to get up his drive. Ended up on next doors lawn after going straight through their garden wall. His missus was not impressed. The next door people were not happy either. Absolutly true.

They are still together, have what could be called an open relationship, have had for years. He used to do his thing she used to do hers. Would love to have seen his face when he went home one night to find a Liverpool FC player sat on his settee who his missus was seeing. That ****ed him off no end.

That's a good way of wasting fuel assuming the engine was idling, leave it in gear and the overun fuel shut off operates

Although you say you've already looked, I'd still suggest a thorough looking-over of the engine bay fusebox harness for brittleness, broken wires and loss of insulation. Don't ask me where you can get another set, I'm looking myself and all I can find is the entire engine compartment harness for about as much as the car is worth!
