Hi All
I am hoping that someone out there knows whats wrong with my truck. 2000 TD4
Before Christmas we thought the starter motor was on the blink as you would turn the key, and just that dreaded ..... click. Try it a few times and the engine started. This was not happening regularly, or at any particular time/weather - just at the most inconvenient moments !!
Then a different problem emerged intermittent with the starter motor fault, which was the dashboard lights would go out, sometimes all of them, but when they weren't on you knew the engine would not fire, it turned over (no probs with the starter) but it wouldn't be until the lights reappeared that the engine would start. We then looked to probs with the immobiliser or ignition. This still was not causing too much grief as after a dozen or so turns the engine would start.
Yesterday was a different thing .... I was driving and just approaching a roundabout, the engine died, I was indicating and ALL electrics went off except the ABS light and the traction control light. The power steering goes heavy. When stopped, the problem is the same and she does start again - eventually, when the lights come back on. She did it again this morning on my way to work - not funny anymore !!!!
Has anyone else had this or similar, I can't find anyone close who has a computer plug in for landrovers, others further afield are quoting a week until they can even have a look !!!

Thanks for that - it is relatively easy job/cost?? We have a Haynes !!!

Easy job but don't know the cost, won't be much. Remove the plastic covers from around the steering column and fiddle with the wiring next time it won't go. It's usually bad connection or the internal contacts of the ign switch.

I had the same problem (October 2008 i think)after a days surfing.I spent the night trying everything.Furiosly turning the key, checked all fuses and wiring.I spent the night trying to sleep in my hippo beside a stormy beach. In the morning after twiddling the key for hours i eventually got ignition lights, still happened intermittently I think i might have sprayed wd40 into the ignition, but its cured, hasn't happened in a very long time......maybe since i changed the engine.

It wouldn't do any harm to check all connections on your wiring loom from the battery and clean all the earths(12.2 haynes)12.22 tells you where to find the earth points you'll see the black wires going into a metal connector bolted to the body.

as usual another long winded reply, dont go spendin money on it nuthins broke.

Be wary of WD40 or any other oil in the ignition switch though. It can gum up and attract more dirt once the solvent evaporates. Use switch cleaner then a graphite spray which is better. Make sure all the battery connections and alternator plugs etc are clean and tight too.

Thanks OldIrishWulf - all ideas gratefully received. Will take a look at the earths as well.

On a different note have you heard about the surf reef off Bournemouth, we live a couple of miles away, novel idea ?? Mind you I don't expect you need artificial waves where you are !!??

Thanks to all for your help. Think it is the ignition switch. Have a new one on order, unfortunately its the 'official' Landrover model @ £50, but less than the garage wanted to investigate!!!

Thanks again :crazy_driver:
