Hi all

after decatting and spending considerable time on the mechanicals off my new-to-me disco 1 300tdi es, i went to use the lights this morning due to crap weather and found i had an electrical fault as well as the many mechanical ones:mad:

Here we go,

Ignition off, Sidelights on gives sidelights and N/S dip beam,

Engine running, sidelights on gives rapidly flashing sidelights with a clicking noise coming from glovebox area, dip beams on gives lights but still with clicking noise from a relay, about 2 or 3 clicks per second.

Considering the car supposedly had a new MOT two weeks ago, i am wondering if it is indeed a bent certificate now, there is an oil leak on one rear disc and there was no water in the wash-bottle either, both of these are failures.

I hate electrical faults, any help???

Thanks
Dave

Sounds like you are getting water in and its messing with your electrics. If you pull off the passenger side kick panel you should be able to have a good look around and check for any water ingress.

MOT may have been fine as it is only what is there on the day of the test and if it was a dry day the electrical fault may not have shown. As for the oil leak it could be seals but again a quick clean before testing wouldnt have shown up.

Would be surprised if a mot tester would fail a car for an emtpy water bottle, they usually just give the windscreen a squirt and if water comes out that is a pass.

there are many places that water can get in but the usual problems come from sunroofs (if you have them) or the top of the windscreen iirc. Windscreen appears to be quite a simple fix (a bit of silicone across the top) but sunroof can be a bit harder.

Check the condition of the 3 pin plugs on the back of the headlight bulbs, probably need replaced. They tend to melt over the years causing a bad earth connection. Also clean up headlight/sidelight earth points just behind headlights on inner wing.

I'd put a large amount of wedge on that being an earth fault.
Check all the earth connections around the battery and the ones around the front lights!

As he says ^^^^^ check the main body earth behind the battery. Black cable, earth point looks like a cable clamp. Undo bolt clean all contact surfaces to bright metal and re-assemble.

I did say i hated electricals didn't i:mad:

just spent 45 minutes with head under footwell trying to figure out why the hazard lights were flashing without being told to:confused: Turns out that it was the bloody alarm system - hazards flashing & central locking disabled. Key in ignition and turn to 2 = all happy again, poxy alarms.

Anyway it looks like the relay thats clicking is in the passenger footwell, the one with the blue socket & yellow relay.

Need to get a wiring diagram or relay list i think.

Cant find any bad earths:mad:

Have discovered that i have Dim/Dip but what does that do????

Looking at diagrams i cant see any relay between supply and lamps, so i cant figure out what would make them flash???

It only flashes when the engine is running:confused::confused:

Bloody electrics.

What part of the country are you in ?

If it is a bad earth they are sometimes hard to spot. may well be worth taking off the battery to body earth giving it a clean and refitting its about a 5 minute job and cant hurt.

Ok, cleaned loads of bulb sockets, replaced one bulb, unplugged the dim/dip resistor and checked any earth i could see.

The fault has cleared up now but i cant tell if it was my tinkering or the fact that it was dry today ???

Thanks for all the input

Dave
