Hi Guys,

Desperately need some help, low on cash so I have got to sort this one my self...major problems with electrics:

1) Wipers come on randomly all the time
2) Horn turns on wipers and turns off stereo but no horn
3) lights seem to dim on full
4) towing electrics only work one side of the trailer
etc etc etc

I have no idea how to start so any advice for an idiot like me would be greatly appreciated!!!! Please???

cheers,

Dan

What vehicle ?

I would start with checking all the earth straps you can fine, starting at the battery and working through each circuit in turn.

Check the trailer socket

sorry - its a defender!!

How do I get to the dashboard earth strap?

Many thanks,

Dan

Under the bottom edge of the speedo binnacle is a screw on each side. There is another screw on each side of the side panel of the binacle near the top. There should then be an earth stud at the back of the dash. I think there is also one on the bulkhead near the brake servo.

Dan,

how did you get on with this?

I have the comedy issue of the horn coming on whenever the wipers are working. Also, no horn.

I will try the earth straps as described above and will report back.

Cheers,

Vulch

Also check for for trapped / chaffed wiring around the steeing column and pull apart and reconnect any connectors you find as they oxidise / corrode causing bad continuity.
As stated in earleir posts most liekly earth probs too

Good luck :)

what engine, earths are in different places, on the 300 theres no earth point behind the dash, its on the bulkhead under the bonnet.

I had a similar issue with horn / flash / indicators - turns out each stalk off the steering wheel is a independent unit (each stalk controls a number of different functions but is one control circuit) which can turn faulty. Try replacing them both for about £40 - £60; worked for me or try spraying them with WD40....
