Decided to have a look at my sunroof yesterday ('02, TD4, 5 door, ES).
It was only trying to lift the one side, I thought one of the cables had broken or the slider mechanism had siezed.
In preparation I bought a new cable and a repair kit consisting of new plastic gears, cable sliders and gear cut rack slides.
After removing the glass, I could see that the L.H. pivot block which operates the wind deflector had broken.
I then proceeded to remove the slider assembly screws-as per RAVE but the sliders would not move. It appears that they put a few blobs of mastic type adhesive on the underside at manufacture !! After finally removing them, I found that the slider was broken (Where the cable slots in) and a further plastic link had broken-had a look on Microcat and it's not listed.
As rain is forecast later this week I bit the bullet and ordered a pair of new slide assemblies, complete with cables (Genuine LR) for £105 each side. Fitted them and everything is now fine.
I now have 3 cables spare (2 used, but O.K. and one brand new (LR part) and the repair kit I didn't use.
If anyone needs any of these parts, just drop me a PM. :):)

well done those sunroofs are a devil to get right at times, I am just hoping it is just the motor on mine as it slides a bit and just keep getting the football rattle sound.

The gear on the motor is steel with helix grooves, not teeth and the cable is a wire wound spiral over a "Bristle" type core so the gear literally screws the cable along and pulls/pushes it. There is also a plastic gear which is hidden behind the motor mounting plate, I think the complete sunroof tray has to come out to access it
Knowing what I know now regarding the slide assemblies being glued to the sunroof tray-I can't see the need for it-the job is quite straightforward. I must have spent an hour figuring out why the slides would not lift after the screws were removed. There is no reference to applying sealant to the sunroof tray underneath the slides in RAVE.
I have a tip for getting better access to the motor screws-remove both sun visors and the plastic fastener in front of the interior lamps, this will enable the headlining to be dropped low enough for access to the two motor screws that are not accessible through the lamp opening. You will of course also need to remove the headlining finisher trim around the sunroof aperture.
When refitting the roof glass, remember to set it level at the front to 1mm low and level at the back to 1mm high. The springs for the wind deflector are easier to hook in with the slides moved back enough to see and locate them in the pockets. Locate the "Hooks" first, followed by the springs and then lower the front of the deflector, whilst pushing towards the rear of the car to enable the two "Nibs" which act as height stops to locate under the roof.
I would say that removal of both slides would take about an hour. You need T20 and T27 Torx bits.

the sun roof is pretty easy to get out just take the head lining out ,that need all the grad handles taken off the 2 lights out and drop the rubber around the doors at the top then take the plastic studs/covers out. open back door and slide out then it is a matter of a few nut to get off before putting back i would check the seal around the edge i supper glued it back on the wifes.
