Okay........ i understand it being 85 amp welder but 3/16th of what?? confused

thickness of the steel, If 13mm=1/2" steel then your limit would be under 2mm plate and that would be pushing, Weld may look ok but penetration will be your limiting factor.

I pulled this of a welding site

Maximum Amps:

90 amp

110 amp

130 amp

150 amp

180 amp

*¹ Maximum steel thickness (butt weld)

2.0mm

2.5mm

3mm

4mm

5mm

*² Maximum steel thickness (with V and root gap)

3.0mm

3.8mm

4.5mm

6mm

7.5mm

So your limit is under 2mm plate in single pass welding.

Cheers mate! So for a good weld it needs to penetrate yes? I must sound like a right dummy! gotta learn somewhere hey lol

no not at all. Ask question before the fact/job is all part of learning. As has been mentioned on here time and time again, is cheap is not the way to do things. If you are short of quid save until you can get the proper tool. A welder to repair any chassis work is 150 amp minimum 185 is all the better Buy once and take care of it will last a life time of repairs. So if you factor in the initial cost, then divide over 20 years the life of the tool then it is a few penny's to use.
