electric fan switch

Update:

I removed the viscous fan some time ago and utilised an electric fan that I had. All was good but the capillary switch has been playing up - possibly needs nothing more than a clean. The switch is self contained and utilises a piggy back live from within the engine bay.

I'm tempted to replace the switch with one from X Eng and include a manual overide switch in the cab. Anyone used them or what do you use?

I simply have a switch on the steering column which activates a relay. I used to have a thermoswitch so it just cames on when the temp got to a certain value, but I replaced my radiator and the threads were different and have never got round to reinstating it.

I am the only person who drives my LR, I am alert to my gauges are telling me so I am confident that I will always notice an increase in temp and turn it off if needed, I have needed it once or twice in 5 years now and both times was not during normal driving.

I've go the the XEng switch on my 300TDi with a Durite over-ride switch.

The fan has never come on as the cooling system works perfectly likewise warm up time & running temperature have not changed from when the viscous fan was fitted. The thermostatic switch is fitted into the bottom hose so it only opeates the fan if the radiator can't disipate the heat quickly enough on its own but that point hasn't been reached yet, it might happen more if your rad is slugged up or blocked but not when all is ok.
