After more tuning on me 200tdi (has a bit bigger intercooler and straight through zorst) I have been a little concerned about the EGT temperature. Planning on testing it soonish however wanted to know about any thoughts about this? anything to watch out for etc? Engine temp is only a tad over half way on the dial. Seems to stay there even on long drives and some hills + off road. Cheers

I had an egt gauge on my td5 disco and would often see 900 degc on hard long climbs
Way to hot as it did crack a turbo!
Sensor goes into manifold before turbo
This was chipped to the max, bigger intercooler, boost controller etc
You cant really go by the standard coolant temp gauge as it runs in between a set of parameters, so what you see is a rough idea of whats going on

If you do get an EGT probe, make sure the guage/receiver allows you to calibrate it, simplest way to do so is by dipping the sender in a pot of boiling water.

Separate, there is a lot of mass to warm up before any water temp change would be noticed (block/water etc), exhaust gas temp change is very rapid so the damage can be done in a very short time before the water temp changes.

from when i've looked.. high gear, long hill, max boost 700/720 pre turbo, but you'd be wiser to stick around 650 max.

depends on where you fit it ofc

Do you reckon i'ts worthwhile having or not much point? I wouldn't say i've tuned it to the max and a i have a uprated intercooler. Would rather not fit one if I dont have too. Will probably bring it back a bit to be on the safe side - I get paranoid :p . Hopefully swappig to a v8 this year anyway...

If you tow heavy loads it might be advisable for warmer weather, but tbh I think as long as you aren't belching black smoke you should be OK. Smoke = less than ideal combustion leading to higher EGT's. Make sure you have good induction and no smoke and your EGT's should take care of themselves.

I'm running a hybrid turbo, large IC, boost box, heavy map, and am not really worried. But then I don't tow very often - and it's mainly in wet Yorkshire weather at that!

if you have a larger intertcooler, just tweaked the pump a little and haven't touched the boost.. then you are probably ok.

Cheers for all the advice, I don't tow so it shouldn't be an issue. It doesn't plume black smoke but could do with a bit more refinement. Boost is untouched. Might get hybrid turbo at a later stage but toying with a 3.5v v8 EFI - power without the engine strain. The intercooler I have isn't full size but has a larger core. Thanks again
