Egr????

Hiya again
I have been reading through these threads and can see EGR
What is an EGR? What does it look like? Why remove it if landrover fitted it? What does it do? How can it improve performance? And lastly do I have a catalytic converter on a 1993 disco 2.5 TDI Diesel? Sorry last question again! If I have do I remove it and for what reason?

I am SO glad you asked that, I was thinking exactly the same!!!!! Mine is a 300TDi though, registered 01/01/95

First of all, check to see if you have an EGR fitted. A lot of UK cars didn't have them fitted (not required) but I'm not sure which date they were filtered out. I have attached (hopefully) an image of the area where the EGR goes, and you'll see the blanking plate just below the rocker cover.

An Egr doesn't improve performance, it retards it, through its operation. Removing it will increase performance and fuel economy.

Not sure about the cat question, someone more knowledgeable will be on soon to tell you.

if you have the following mods done to your Tdi you will think someone had just added an extra turbo,

remove the EGR
fit uprated inter-cooler
full through exhaust (remove Cat)
silicone hoses
K&N air filter
small amount of tuning

all this should cost about £1500 fitted but in my opinion well worth it

I have just removed the front pipe of my 300 tdi 95 model and replaced it with part number ESR2297 which is a defender 300 tdi pipe with out a cat in it also fitted a blanking plate to the EGR all for about £40, well worth doing

Just had the whole exhaust replaced on my Disco 300TDi (96) and the one they took off was the original! They were offering for £200:

EGR removal
Cat cut
Tuning

I now have the 'cat cut' asI have a straight through system without a cat. I will remove the EGR myself. Dont know about the tuning maybe next service. Tell me more about uprated intercoolers?

Thanks but can someone tell me what does an EGR do? What is it for? £1500.00 Well worth It!??? You must be P****d mate! Thats more than the whole vehicle is worth. I only use it for shooting and dog walking in difficult areas to get to with a normal car. I do not intend to race or rally the damn thing!

The Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve does just that.
It recirculates part of the exhaust gases in an effort to achieve less emissions.
If you remove it and blank it off with a plate costing 3 or 4 quid it will make the engine run cleaner and allegedly more economically.
I did it on my last 300tdi as well as winding out the pump a bit (well someone else did it for me) and it made a noticeable difference to the power.

Did you get more mpg? the guy who services mine reckons that doing the cat cut, putting a K&N filter in and the EGR mod as well as a tweak would pay for itself in a matter of weeks in better performance and MPG

No.
I felt more power but the MPG is the same.
I now have a later ES auto with all the mods incl an ECU chip and all the other bits mentioned above but the MPG remains the same.

Its not a difficult job as far as I can see its a matter of undoing 2 bolts (which may be very tight) and fitting a blanking plate. Or removing it altogether which means blanking off vacuum and intake pipes too.

The problem is not really when the EGR works, because it only lets exhaust gas into the inlet in very specific circumstances, I think when the engine is on the overrun with revs over 2000 or something like that. Don't quote me. The real problem is that the valve eventually sticks, and if it sticks open you get EGR all the time which soon makes your intake system look like a Charles Dickens chimney. So the best idea is to disable it before it goes wrong. (because it will)

If you don't have a cat do you therefore not have an EGR fitted?

The cat is part of the exhaust system closest to the manifold. The EGR valve is situated on the exhaust manifold and links to the inlet manifold.
