Hi there,

Hope you are all well. As per my other thread about cold start smoke and+black smoke. Went to the garage and they tested the vehicle and plugged into diagnotics and checked hose. All seemed ok but the outcome was egr clogged. Garage said that i dont drive enough and to keep using it and sometimes in tip mode. They did not charge me at for this. Yesterday drove 120 miles return and seems ok but at times from stand still to accelerate, at 1200 rpm bit sluggish and black smoke at back. It does this only when warm and intermitantly. Are these the sypmptoms of EGR? Asked if I it could be cleaned and said that diesel conditioner was used. I have carried on using redex at every top up. Would these cleaners eventially clean free up EGR?

Also opened the bonnet today and one of the hoses, which is like a U type hose, toward the right front of the bay, seems oily. Is this normal on a diesel that certain hoses have traces of oils build up? Its black! its directly above the round silver thing! not sure what it is.

Your help will be much apreciated! as you guys have gathered I worry too much! lol!

The round 'silver thing' is the EGR valve.
Sounds as though the hose clip on the manifold inlet is loose. This is letting the oily air, which has been through the EGR, escape thus reducing the charge into the engine so it will feel sluggish.
As there is so much oil about it also sounds as though the crankcase breather has not been changed for some time and is blocked. Change it pronto or oil will be blown into the turbocharger and you will need a new one. I would suggest putting on the BMW centrifugal separator rather than the LR "filter" which will only become blocked again.

Hi there,

Fl went in last week and said pipes ok! But there still seems old oil gunk near clips. With regards to crankcase breather, is this the same as cyclone breather on turbo?
Had big service in oct and was changed under recommendation. Now last visit just egr and just to keep driving it! Did not charge but still not happy

Daft observation but have you checked the oil level. I had the same problem last year after buying my TD4. Six weeks before I bought it the car had been in to a Main Stealer somewhere in Wales. They had filled it I presume to the 6.8 litres it says in the book rather than the 5.5litres it actually takes. I took over a litre out and things improved although at the time I was told by others on the forum some oil was to be expected. The crankcase breather had been changed on the main stealer service.

hi there,

Have checked the oil the other day and seemed ok. This is really getting to me know and really ****ed off. Dont know where to turn

its not difficult, get a haynes manual or download the rave cd from green oval.
Alot of people blank off the egr. there is a sticky about this.

When I bought myTD4, 2years old, 20k miles, the hoses you refer to were covered in oil sweat and the insides were filthy. I cleaned them but have since replaced them as they are inclined to split. I have not noticed any sign of oil on their outsides since fitting the new ones.
I have now disconnected the small operating tube to the EGR although I am not convinced this makes much difference.
Don't worry about the oiliness on the outside of the hoses, as a car salesman would say 'They all do that!' As long as the car goes well and doesn't use oil enjoy it.

Sorry, quote this for?

Also spoken to garage and all is busy! Starting to get the feeling something is going on! When spending 600 quid on servicing
And is now running like poo, really ****es me off. Not sure if I am getting whole story! Car only has 24k and is poo.

spoke to the garage and basically got fob off! that they quickly made excuses with regards to having 42 cars in at the same time. They basically quickly plugged it in and found nothing and fobbed me off. Now that want to take the car in for a few days to check. I am very relunctant to take it back. I will attempt to clean egr with the help of haynes manual. Would this assist me? Or is there a step by step on the forum? Looking at my receipt on my 6 year service, a breather was changed. Part number 8510298. Is this the crankcase breather? Just worried and slight oil evidence near jubilee clips

Is there anyone how could assist me? Rather not bypass Egr as I would like to keep the vehicle how it should.

Look forward to your reply

Regards
Nick

I sounds like now is the time to change garages - they are tasking the **** - yu are reluctantly beginning to realise this - EGR mod is very easy - get a kit of e-bay. also change the crankcase breather - they may have changed it - or just charged you for it. clean out all of the hoses and then see what it is like. All those things are within the remit of anyone with 2 brain cells.

The BMW replacement for the breather "filter" is a cyclone separator. It fits into the same casing on top of the engine as the LR version. LR have now specified a filter change every 12k miles but still use the filter design the performance of which degrades over time. Much safer to fit the new BMW version, but beware as BMW may sell you the old filter design if you just ask for the crankcase breather. (Voice of experience! I had to take it back and get the newer design) The BMW part No. is 11 12 7 799 224.

apparently mine was changed. but if they did it is another story!!! is there diys ,step by step I can find on the crankcase breather and egr?

took off egr! Got pic, can I show you? Put back on but drove it today and and more responsive. When driving and say stuck in traffic. The go to pull off, started to hesitate at 1250 rpm. Dark to see if smoke. but Hesitant.

Still can be EGR? Was very banged up! I have a pic to show you!

Back to this bit. No redex will not clean the egr. I would recomend changing to Millers EcoMax Diesel Power. It's alot better at cleaning your engine and gives a slight performance boost (lots of people on here use it).
As for how to post a picture... have'nt got a clue, but if your egr looks like mine did before I took it off it will be full of sh*t. Get a blanking kit, easy to fit and you can forget about it.

Hope you get it sorted :)

Were u getting same symptoms?

Smoke on fire up on cold start?

Sluggish low revs, when car is at temp?

Hi vic,

Took note of the part no. and went to a BMW garage overhere today. The nbr is correct, I paid it Euro 50,22 which makes Pds 43,5558. Does that match the price you had to pay it overthere ??

Took a couple of pics. Will add them, 1st a pic. of an old filter and then pics. from four angles of the new one.
