EGR blanking kit question...

just going to order a blanking kit, but theres 1 listed with a hose,1 without , just wondering if the hose is needed or not and what the hose bit does ?

also the de cat pipe, is there any real difference in a £16.99 one and a more expensive ? £16.99 one to be avoided or is it fine ? or any cheaper/better places to get the pipe and egr kit from ?

Can't comment on the de-cat, but blanking the EGR is straightforward, and yes you should get the kit with the hose, much neater

ok mate thanks, just wondered the exact difference with/without the hose ?

another pipe here for £30 delivered, how do you go about what pipe to buy ?

just buy the blanking plate and hose i expect your notice a difference with a new turbo hose unless yours has been replaced recently , just remember to spray the egr nuts with penatrateing fluid a few day prior to removeing

Bear in mind that the original poster was talking about a TDi 300 and I think you have a TD5?

They are completely different kits.

Here is an example of a TD5 kit:

EGR Blanking Kit - all TD5 - these now have a retaining bead unlike the one in the picture.

You wouldn't normally need a new hose for the job, unless you go for a silicone hose set.

good point thanks, was half asleep this morning when i read it...

Got my de cat pipe from Paddocks+ complete system.I went for the one with the flexi on the down pipe as it was easier to fit
I think Paddocks deliver free in the UK

With a TDi 300 (which I think is what you've) you can do it with or without the top hose, but imo it's better to do it with the hose.

Re the de-cat downpipe the part no is ESR2297 - it's a defender one- and fits very easily if you jack up the chassis to create working room between the engine and the front axle. 30 mins job tops. Makes it much more responsive.

i just wondered what the exact difference is with/without the hose ??

so how much will it improve mpg by roughly ? thats my main goal to do things to get the mpg down as much as possible aswell as having it run as nice as possible

The first thing I would say is, if your main emphasis is on improving fuel consumption, are you sure you are going to be happy with a Disco? The best overall mpg you are likely to get is about 30mpg.

However, moving onto your questions:

1. De-EGR - if you only use the plate to block off the EGR valve you will still have the original top hose in place, which will give you disturbed airflow (due to the EGR pipe junction) and therefore not optimum operation. The kit with the top hose replaces the existing one and gives optimum airflow.

The benefits of this modification: you will no longer has mucky exhaust gases being recirculated into the engine, which has to be just generally a good idea, doesn't it? Otherwise why would we bother with air filters at all, if clean air was not important?

You will find a subtle but real improvement with engine performance particularly at low revs. You may also find a slight improvement in mpg.

These benefits will be felt most if you take the time to clean the intercooler and it's associated pipework plus the inlet manifold.


2. De-EGR - this is the best mod anyone can do to a TDi 300 imo, apart from thorough general servicing.

The TDi 300 as std has a form of catalytic converter in the exhaust downpipe. This is really no more than a type of filter and clogs up over the years. Get rid out it and replace with a Defender de-cat downpipe no. ESR2297. Buy from Paddocks for about £15+vat.

Benefits of this modification - the engine will breath easier and more deeply as a result it will be more responsive and will improve mpg. On average I reckon an improvement of 2-3mpg is quite achievable.

As you can see these modifications are cumulative, you won't get the benefits if you try to cherry-pick the bits you fancy and leave the bits you can't be ärsed to do. Nothing improves a Disco like regular servicing, and I don't mean regularly once a flood!!! I do ours at least every 6,000mls.


However the single most effective way of improving the mpg on a Disco TDi 300 is to understand it - it's pro's and cons, it's limitations.

These are, by comparison to any modern family car, SLOW. If you try to keep up with a modern car your fuel consumption will drop through the floor. Acceleration is stately to say the least, optimum (for economy reasons) cruising speed on A road is about 55mph and on faster roads about 60mph. Of course they will go faster but the weight, lack of power and aerodynamics will punish mpg - are you ready for that?

im learning fast about these, been driving it every day since i bought it-5 days odd now, and not been over 70mph, i accelerate at a leisurly pace and generaly drive it in a calm cruise like way, i like the comfort , ive bought it for the comfort and fun and drivign expirience...not for speed , i have my bmw for that , incidently i took my beamer for a quick spin round the block yesterday and getting in that after days int he disco..made that seem so so low and sports car like and fast...i loved it ! so having both comliment eachother and offer a difference , and make appriciate the other

mpg...30 il be happy with, thats about same as my beamer if i give it a little and dont grandad drive (in which case 35mpg) so average 30 in the beamer, if i can average 30 in the disco driving it sensiblly...i also like to think of the auto box etc and fuel when driving..so do drive it sensibly, basicly the aim/hope for the disco...is that when driving that, fuel costs remain the same, not vastly increase , ive been driving it a lot this week as the novelty new factor, so once that settles il get on with working out my mpg/fuel costs in it compared to the beamer,il be delighted if the same give or take

i got a lot of country roads around my house, a few off road areas and tracks etc...i love the disco

also..6k is what i do on the beamer, well on that its oil change at 6 and filter at 3 for good measure , and keep right on top of that car, and the engine rewards me by never letting me down and always drives nice, disco will be the same il look after it
