Right folks - get your heads together on this one for me...
For the last few months I have had an annoying squeak comming from my O/S/F wheel... it started when only turning left and then eventually it was there all the time once the car was warmed up. This weekend I have stripped the pads off, cleaned, checked and re-greased - GONE!
Today its back to square 1 with the eek eek eek on left hand turns!! AArgh!!! When you put the brakes on (even just slightly) the squeaking stops... I have grabbed the wheel and there is no play I can detect.
Anyone had this or got any ideas?

You could try putting a small amount of copper slip grease on the BACK side of the pad (non disk side). I often use this to stop brake squeal.
Available at all good car spares shops :)

Hi Mark

Already greased up with the finest copper mate. Even cleaned out the anti-squeal shims. You could eat your dinner off the calipers too.

have you checked between the backplate and the disc for anthing that shouldn't be there such as pebbles, small children, curling tongs or various parts of road kill?

LOL, nope, no small children, stray dogs or Mondo stuck behind my backplate. Ming - I said you COULD eat your dinner off the calipers. Not you SHOULD. Everyone knows dinner should be eaten from the engine cover to keep your plate warm silly! To get to the bottom of this I am gonna take the disc off and clean EVERYTHING again. Wish me luck..

Ok if I'm tellin yer how to suck eggs here then just ignore my thread, remember i cannot see yer disc.s, if ya have had new pads fitted recent, then ya can assume a bit off metal, from the disc's is a normal thing, also the front edge or [outer circumference] orft the disc ends up wiv a sharp rusty protruding bit, if you've got that , wiv a bastard file at 45deg on the outer edge file it all the way around, on both inner and outer edge, then do it on tother wheel, [ pads can squeal on this as turning wheel pre loads a bearing] and you wont be able to feel that pre load, the only other thing i could suggest is crap pads, remember pads are always in surface contact wiv the disc, so the pre load could kick the noise in if they are contaminated or just crap pads,i hope this helps yer. . .:)

i find an angle grinder is better fur getting rid of thant little bit on the edge. maybe they don't angle grinder on the planet zog
Mrs Ming uses the zap gun, but would not trust most earthlings wiv that,er yes the grinder is the easy option . . .:)

Nice one Ming. The pre-load thing on the wheel bearings does make sense as this does start off mainly when turning left shoving the load of the weight onto the right hand side. The disks and pads have not done mega miles and have lots of buttie still on them, however I will follow your advice and inspect them closely. With regards to the pads being naff - they are quality items but I will probably replace them anyway while I have the calipers off. I must admit - It did strike me as a wheel bearing issue due to the noise starting when under load on that wheel but as you mention there is a little play there anyway that does explain why I did not detect and play when I rocked the wheel. Cheers for your help - will let you know how I got on...
