My brothers y plate td4 had a service from this mobile guy last week outside his house. When he had finished he said that during changing the air filter the ecu burnt out??? and needs attention. He has removed it and sent it off to be reconditioned and said it could be anything from £75 to £375. My question is how would this happen just doing a service. I might be wrong but its sounds fishy to me.Can anyone shed any light on this.

haven't a clue how that could happen changing an air filter.

have you asked him directly?

The only way this could happen is if the battery positive cable has touched the ECU casing. They dont just burn out when changing the air filter. Anyway I have brand new ECU which I dont need so if interested or if he has problems with them reconditioning the original one PM me. Cheers

thanks tank, but the guy has already sent it to someone in birginham to have it repaird but if no good will let you know. yes he is going to charge my brother thats why i would like to know how it could happen..he also said that looking at it it would not have lasted more that 2 or 3 months anyway ??? again how would you know this ???

He is talking absolute tosh, the car was fine before he started to work on it so if he has created the problem he should sort it and not charge your brother for it, as Optimus Prime states "smacks of a scam". How can you tell from looking at the casing how long an ECU is going to last as the casing is sealed and protects the internals of the ECU. Along with the ecu fried itself when changing the air filter.....I have never heard such bulls*it in all my life, and he is suppose to be a mechanic!!! In my opinion -
1) Get a new mechanic
2) Get him to pay
