+1 on thermal switch. Sounds like it is making just enough air to raise the back but not enough for the front.

I assume the rear valves are open [first] and the ECU is stuck there and won't open the front because it doesn't think the compressor is running (because the thermal switch is fried)?

Sounds like he has a weak compressor or leaking diaphragm and a knackered thermal switch. He needs to do the checks in my EAS post in tech archive. And follow instructions to eliminate things one by one, weak compressor, diaphragm valve leaking Etc.. Guessing will get him nowhere. Rears always go up first then fronts. If he jumps compressor relay he needs to have engine running for EAS to work. EAS will not work unless there is an engine speed signal from engine ECU. EAS can go down (self level) with engine not running but it cannot go up.

What's the OP's 'fairy lights' on centre console height status doing? Might be an indicator.

When I removed my airbags, relay and compressor I had the 35mph max message because there was no air. Pain because it covers any other messages by staying on constant, and the beeping will drive you insane.
