eas fault intermittent

hello again. My 2000 diesel p38 has developed aother issue. This time its the air suspension playing up. Every so often it will bleep up eas fault on the dash and raise its self to the off road position. Im pretty stumped by this and need some help.

Ive replaced the timer delay relay and all airbags so far and thought it had gone away but today it did it again. Ive had it plugged into a diagnostic machine and first it said faultly signal front left and right anxious rear left. We cleared the fault then it came back up with a whole load of different faults from exhaust closed, no air input to faulty height sensors on all 4 corners.
The guy with the diagnostic said it could be an earth/live issue as we have got all sorts of different things come up. Ive had a look at the rave manual but couldnt find anything about earth points or anything regarding the type of fault i have.

Does anyone have any ideas on what the fault could be or where the earths are located.

+1. Multiple contradictory faults usually mean bad comms with ECU. Check the pins on the OBDII socket are good and clean. Check the white plug and socket behind the L/H side passenger foot well panel. This is the connection to the ECU from the height selector switch on the dash. If it has corrosion or pins are dirty that can cause your problem.

Yer the odb socket isnt in the best state. Ill check the white plug connections now n let you know what i find cheers

Hmmmmm the Snap-On website information does indicate the Software does cover the P38 EAS system....

As Wammers says, the OBD socket is also a common fail point!

+1 just had mine out this week to remove green/blue corrosion :-(

All working perfect now

I think u maybe right about the white plugs behind the foot plate. Just pulled them apart and there wet. 3 of the pins are pretty green and crusty. Ill clean them up and refit everything then see what happens. Hopefully this will sort it as its been doing my head in for ages ill let u know cheers
 
The connections in the plugs where really bad 2 pins had actually rotten right through and snapped off while i was cleaning them off so ive cut the plugs off and rejointed the wiring.
Started the car no fault. Left car running for 2 mins and the fault has come back. Same thing eas fault on the dash and car raises to max height.
Any idea where to look next?

This is what I was having trouble with, the fault was corrosion on the height sensor (front Left) awkward to get at!!

but then my laptop wouldn't sync with the car to reset the suspension

corrosion removed from OBDII and working perfect as before :)
 
But having said all that - I am planning a long trip, so still going to take my inverter and my Mac with me just in case

as Manchester to Austria is a long way without back up!! lol
 
Right, cleaned up the OBD connection and as said earlier cut the white plugs off and reconnected all the wiring.
When i reconnected the battery the turned the igintion on it bleeped up max speed 35, turned ignition back on and off and no warning came up. Drove it 20ish miles to pick up missus, parked out side train station on level ground nothing happen, (i'm at this point thinking excellent its sorted)
Got back home parked on the drive (engine still running) which is slightly slopped the car self levelled, so though i'll give it a min see what happens and sure enough, bleep bleep bleep eas fault, and it blows up to max height and all 4 lights are flashing it the height display.
So a day in the workshop at -3 degrees and still not fixed, Any more ideas anyone?

Plug it into Diagnostics and re-read the fault codes now the OBD socket is clean...see what is logged.

You can get the Diagnostic Lead and Software from Datatek at around £11+postage...send him a PM

ok i'll have to do that tmw then.

Cant i just use the snap on diagnostic machine on it again?

Also been reading up on height sensors as that was what came up on the diagnostic first time, manual says about recalibrating the system if i do have to change them, but it just says refer to testbook and i couldnt find any info on how you actualy recalibrate it, Is this a job for a specailist or worse main stealer?

Send Datatek some wine tokens, this will definitely help your EAS problems.

Sorry to say this but throw that in your tool box its a worthless piece of junk on a P38, good for other cars but defo junk on a P38...

Datatek's disc/lead combo, an old laptop with a serial port (preferably ), plus a tape measure, is all you need to clear faults and recalibrate the EAS.
