Hey guys just ran a search for an answer after link on top of link i didn't find an answer.

i just picked up a early Freelander 1998 model turbo diesel 2.0L and its hard to select gears while the engine is running the clutch engages just off the floor, clutch foot peddle feels like a normal clutch, the previous owner had replaced the whole hydraulic clutch

whats your opinion?

It'll have a PG1 gearbox. These are known to suffer from a few clutch issues. First off, make sure the clutch release lever is free, and I mean properly free. The shaft that goes into the gearbox suffers from corrosion, which makes it stiff to operate. This in turn causes flexing of the slave cylinder support bracket, which eventually cracks and doesn't support the slave cylinder correctly. If the lever is stiff, lubricate the shaft liberally with WD40 and then engine oil, moving the lever to work the lubricant in.
Also if it's had replacement hydraulics, were they OE parts? Cheap hydraulics off EBay for example are generally of poor quality and not fit for purpose.
When the hydraulics were fitted, was the system bled before it was fitted. Not doing so correctly leaves air trapped in the system, reducing its effectiveness. To bleed the hydraulics, remove the assembly and hang the master cylinder up high. Then push the slave cylinder into it's bore fully and allow it to return to it's at rest position. Repeat this half a dozen times, so any air in the system is pushed back up to the master cylinder reservoir.

Nodge your an absolute champ! Because the clutch does work im thinking it may be a stuck arm/rod that u mentioned, the old owner i think reused the old mounting plate and said he had welded it stronger

Thanks for the tip on the hydraulics i was wondering how on earth do i bleed it being a sealed system

Sorry maye just re-reading thru your msg
The hydraulic looks to be a cheap item and it was from ebay and i asdume it was used strait out of the box.

A cracking slave mount is a sure sign of a stiff release lever bush. Lubricate it liberally with loads of WD40 and work the lever until free. Then apply engine oil to finish the job.

You can only expel any trapped air, by pushing it up to the master. For this to work, the master must be vertically above the slave, with the wiggly pipeline between them.

Try expelling the air first, just in case it's full of air. Otherwise replace the EBay part, with an OE component. ;)

This is the one the last owner bought and replaced it with https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Clutch-...-1-8L-Petrol-2-0L-Diesel-to-2000/302901659076 since the problem happen with the old hydraulics and now the new one I'm sure its just a sticky lever, the clutch peddle works like a normal clutch but the clutch release is right at the floor and the car rolls forward in gear with clutch all the way to the floor and gears are grindy/sticky can only find 1st gear if i start the car in 1st gear

I just bled the hydraulic clutch and checked that arm on the gearbox i only moved the arm taking up its lose slack and it moved freely so looks like i am going to have to change the clutch

any idea why the car has hardly and speed in 1st gear does this early 1998 model have limp mode? i also have some more questions

the air filter was brand new but after i took the intake hose off the turbo and laid it over the top of the rocket cover today i had oil on my air filter would this possible drip back from the intake hose?

last night when i took it for a drive i started the car let it warm up possibly 2 to 3mins than drove off and 2mins later the glow plug heating light came on than went off any idea whats happening here?

i also have no back lights on the car
