Early 90s VIN numbers

This is one for the anoraks. My 1985 registered 90 has a vin starting with AA - which seems to suggest a 1984 year of manufacture. No probs there, it's obviously early. But do the serial numbers after the letter start at 1 or are they numbered to include test/pre-production vehicles. Just trying to find out how early my old bus is.
It does have wind up window/pull up handle style doors, although they may not be original.

Thanks for this. It is a good explanation of the letters, but there's no further breakdown of the numbers. I'm happy enough that it's 90" number 23 thousand something off the line.
