Hi all
First post, so be gentle
I've recently bought an N (96) Disco I 3.9 V8 and am at the end of my tether with regards to getting it running. (It was bought as a "good runner"
)
I'm really looking for some advice/recommendation on a Land Rover tech/mech to bring it to as I've exhausted my attempts on what to try in order to get it fixed.
I'm in Rutland; approx. 20 miles from Peterborough/Leicester/Northampton if anyone knows of someone from that neck of the woods who could diagnose/repair a tricky problem.
The problem:
Almost as soon as I got it (1 month ago) I found that, although it starts and runs beautifully from cold, after about 20 miles the car will start to lose power, miss and backfire. Sometimes you can limp the 5 miles or so to get you home. Otherwise, when it eventually dies, it won't start. It cranks and tries to fire but, if it does then run; it'll only cough and splutter for a few seconds before dying again. If I leave it for 2-3 hours to cool down (?) and then try it again, it'll fire up and seem to run fine for a while (not so many miles this time) before dying again. I've usually managed to get home before this happens.
What I've tried so far:
I had a friend (who claims not to be at all mechanically minded) look at it and this is what he has done:
The problem still remains the same and Rick, apologetically, cannot spare me any more time and has exhausted his "stabs" at fixing it. (I don't feel I can ask him anymore anyway)
Despite these shaky beginnings, I have fallen in love with my Disco and it's already adorned with my pink wipers, pink seat covers, pink steering wheel, etc.. Sorry
I didn't pay much for it, £1000, and wouldn't want to spend a fortune getting it fixed but I'm somewhat stuck with it so would be prepared to pay to get someone to look at it. It should be drive-able to the Northampton/Leicester/Peterborough areas but would need to be hot when it was looked at?
I'd be really grateful if someone could recommend a repairer.
Thanks.
Bev

I had a friend (who claims not to be at all mechanically minded) look at it and this is what he has done:
- Visually checked wiring, distributor, hoses, etc..
- Replaced ignition coil
- Replaced ignition amplifier
- Replaced HT leads
- Fitted a spider bypass
- Replaced fuel filter
The problem still remains the same and Rick, apologetically, cannot spare me any more time and has exhausted his "stabs" at fixing it. (I don't feel I can ask him anymore anyway)
