Thinking of doing some lightish off roading at a course when my series 3 diesel is well again......

Now, can you fit a snorkel to a series 3 seeing as it uses a oil bath filter? if so how and where does it route..

Is it worth getting a lifting kit as it wont be doing anything extreme, and if I did fit a kit, how would it affect handling on the road?

Is there anything you guys would recommend fitting before taking it off road?

Well, you just need to get a means of connecting something airtight around the filter housing, or change the air filter and then using some air ducting pipe or the likes, route it out the side of a wing, and up the side of your LR.

You can make these things yourself, get kits etc... Have a look through the photo gallery, there are plenty of pics of DIY's, kits etc...

I can help on the snorkel question. I've just got one for my Series 3 diesel. If you want to do it properly, which is the way I'm going, then you need an air filter housing that is made for a snorkel. I got a brand new one from the Land Rover Orphanage, it cost £50. And for the actual snorkel I've bought a universal one from Rebel 4x4, £85, which should fit just fine. i haven't fitted it yet, that's Sundays job, but I'll let you know how straightforward it is.

if you are doing just lightish off roading then nowt is required for the landy. save your money to buy some more beer and pies.

Would'nt bother with the snorkel unless you're going very deep wading considering how high the air intake is anyway, if you are you will need a wade plug for the flywheel housing ( £2 worth putting in if going off road) breather pipes for axles, etc. routed up into the snorkel. Diff guards & steering guard not a bad idea or you can get super strong steering rods. Lift kits will made it like driving a jelly on road, better to put taller tyres on like 7.50x16 or 235/85R16. Mud terrains. Jackable sills are available not too expensive and easy bolt on fit. Most important of all is decent recovery eyes, on Series the best type are the D ring ones that bolt on top of the front chassis dumb irons using the bumper bolts, that way you can use a 2m strop shackled to both eyes with a central pulling force distributed between the 2 chassis rails. On the back a combi tow ball/ tow pin is OK. I have my SeriesIII Diesel pretty much standard apart from the recovery points and Military Michelin XCL 7.50x16. I do red routes at pay & play courses no problems, any tougher and the damage is too great.
