yu mite have done - i think the yokes are meant to be either 45deg or 90deg out. Having said that, i think they will still fit back on the splines in the wrong position.

i thought the shaft rotated independently of the yokes:eek:

can you suggest a sensible way to free the shaft, it really is stuck and i don't wanna hit it with a hammer no more, now i've been told its subject to alignment.

a block of wood and a trolly jack to support the engine you can then tilt it backwards or forwards when you are getting the box back it. if you do take the box out use an engine crane through one of the front doors, remove the center console and wrap a lifting strap round the gear box when you come to lift it back in find the center point of the box so you have the best control of it when you lift it.
i changed my clutch out side on the street on me own and every one kept tellking me what a b*stard of a job it was but i found it quite easy and the box slipped straight back in :D

i 've been musing over supporting the engine, and trying to keep it at the right angle for putting the gearbox back on.
I don't need to remove the box following the link sean gave me, However i been thinking about overhauling the difflock myself, do i need to remove it to do this, and is it a manageable task for a DIY job.
And how much would a crane set me back?, I'm off to Makro today to have a look at a motorcyle jack, which i thought would be of use for such jobs as gearbox removal, any point?

I think the angle is closer to 20 degrees ... something to do with one yoke being out of phase with the other when turning, so they don't both get caught on the flange yokes at the same time at extreme angles of articulation. ie, one yoke can catch, but the other is still free to rotate, then the first one frees and the other catches ... otherwise if both yokes catch at the same time it's a lot harder to get them freed again.

as per the post you gave me i finally got the gearbox back on with new clutch parts, yesss, few minor tricks and skills picked up on the way, esp, when finally mating the gearbox to engine, in order to lock the shaft splines correctly into flywheel, a little levered twist on the transfer box front prop flange/output shaft while in gear, clicked it in and put an end to several days of struggling. Oh and the best factor of all, aknowledgable mate to help out and keep morale up.RESULT.
