Morning Folks,

I need to fit a new battery! but I dislike doing things twice and I want to put something inside big enough to cope with all the usual demands.

So the question is can I install a single Odyssey 2150 into a stock 1999 TD5 Defender without upgrading any other components?

Or would I be better off with a dual Optima set up, If so what do I need to install and what would the likely cost be?

Dual battery set-ups are used when you know that you're going to be using power when the engine is switched off. You can flatten one battery but you've got the other to start the car. If you're not doing that then measure the space that you've got and talk to a decent battery supplier about fitting the biggest that will physically fit.

I like the idea of having the option to isolate one battery to power lights etc for a campsite then switching to the starter battery. Possible a Red & Yellow top Optima - but then i'd need to install a split charge system which I have never done!

That said this is only a desired luxury, I'd be fine with one decent battery, hence the considering the Odyssey 2150 which fits snugg into the battery box with a little space either side, plus the spec is pretty good although they are expensive.

For camping you might just want to think of carrying a spare battery and hooking it up for the lights. With modern LED lights you'll get a lot of time out of a fully charged battery.
