Hi all.

I've replaced the water pump and thermostat in my DSE, because I didn't know how long ago these had been there. Now I'm finding that the running temperature is lower and this is worrying me a bit, since I have a 400km trip to do tomorrow.

Here's a pic of where it is at now. Before the replacement pump, the pointer used to be fully vertical (12h).

The thermostat is LR original. Could it have installed in the wrong way ?
(Lack of time forced me to drop it at an indy...)

Do you have an airlock? My 99 DSE ran like this when the thermostat was stuck open. I tested it in boiling water and it would open when hot but stay open when I cooled it. When I bought my new stat I tested it and found it had to be at 100C to open slightly. I took it back and got a genuine one which opened correctly. Always test a new stat before fitting

Didn't install it myself and am betting that the indy didn't test it.

I don't _think_ I have an airlock. When I got the car back, for precaution, I blew through the little tube that goes from the radiator to the expansion tank to clear it (was full of coolant). Only drove for 30 minutes and temperature never rose above that.

Another thought: seized viscous fan. If seized it will rotate at full speed, cooling more than needed ?

If the viscus fan was running at full speed you would defanitly here it roaring, also you might feel the car not as responsive as normal as the fun running at full speed takes valuble bhp, ive drove cars with seazed fan and some you can defanatly tell the differance, others just the sound gives it away.:)

Mine runs at just to the left of 12 oclock so to speak, moves up a bit towing the caravan up the Pennines, at least that's how it was before I ditched the viscous fan.

OK, did a 400+km trip and the temperature seems OK. Sometimes it moves closer to 12h, but never passed it. I'm guessing the colder weather is also having some effect on the position of the dial.

Thanks all :)

It's probably the stat opening a little earlier. Weather should not effect it but when the stat opens and shuts does.
