hi again, update from 2 months ago. finally found a nice polish guy to take my clutch prob on.
he showed me old clutch, pressure plate was mullered and so were fork roll pins as you lot said. thanks.
clutch nice and smooth but hard to get gears. read advert again when I bought car and it did say gears hard to get but thought that was down to clutch.
gearstick is leaning over to left and stick is bit floppy (no jokes lol) is there anything on top of the box that I can replace or is it a syncro/gearbox prob? any advice very welcome , thanks

You should have got your nice Polish bloke to have a look at the gear stick housing whilst box was out. Sounds like there maybe worn parts in there. If the gear stick feels like you are stirring a pudding then that is first port of call.

If its late model box like the one I'm working on at the moment it has a remote sender box on top. Wear in that would cause your symptoms - or wear to the yoke.

Have to remove box and 4 bolts to remove selector box - unserviceable so new one will be required if it is the case
 
Selector box bolts to the top of the gearbox. Think someone on here said it could be done without dropping it completely but to be honest once you're that far you might as well drop it.

Might be the detents (I think the word for it is). Sure @jamesmartin said you could change them but I replaced the whole selector box when mine started acting up. The old one is still in my shed awaiting refurbishment!
 
you can remove the selector housing you will need to remove cross member and lower box a little on a jack, gear stick is sprung to 3rd 4th position by an adjuster either side of the housing,ashcroft used to do replacements

thanks for info everyone. i just paid for gearbox to be removed and new clutch etc fitted, don't really want to pay again. being a bodger, wondered if it may be possible to do it from the top if I remove consol and cut bigger hole in floor and weld back after ?
 
I would advise you to do this job properly rather than "bodge" with welds- if the box has been off recently (although an ache and should have been done when it was off) - you should suffer no issues with any seized bolts etc. No spec tools required. Not a long job

yea know what your saying, but I bought it with clutch problem and didn't know about selector problem until test drive after clutch. and I cant do heavy work myself due to ill health so have to pay someone to remove it again worse luck

you dont need to cut a bigger hole just let the box down a little
