The stability control switch on my range rover works fantastically well in stabilising the vehicle when required.
However in what circumstances would it be better to have it turned off?

Some people say switch it off in really snowy/icy conditions as it can cause spins rather than avoid them - I think this advice probably differs from car to car as well as software levels or versions of ASC. When it does get slippy find a deserted place and try for yourself. Last year I found an empty snowy car park and threw the car around with ASC on and off (Citroën C5) the car definitely hung on better with the ASC on. I do this with any new car or change of tyre type/brand to get a feel for it near the limit.
