Hi Im looking for some guidance on a problem with my 96 dse auto . has not been used for some time and spent a bit on new brakes shocks etc ,

The auto box is slow to change up gears ie from 1-2 it has to hit 3500 rpm and 2-3 about 3800rpm , it does go from 3-4 but neds a road speed of 70 65 mph .
sport button on or off has no effect. when put in low the box changes up gears as normal .
Ive changed the MAP sensor and put in a transmision ecu and transfer ecu from another dse rangie , but no change .
The box is not slipping or flaring between changes , fluid and filter changed as well, the transfer box was changed some time ago and changes were perfect before this was done ,
Any ideas welcomed , dont want to buy a new box if its a simple problem. thanks

New transmission ecu need sync to car with diagnostic, transfer ecu faulty, you're always in sport mode.
Does low range gear work? or just same as high range

Thanks for reply the original ecus behave exactly the same way , the gearbox does go into low range ok , and when in low range the gear changes do take place in a normal fashion according to the revs ,
If the transfer ecu is faulty does that effect the gearchanges ?

It did on mine, changed at very high revs, but it's a Rover so one never guarantee:)

You said transmission ecu was changed, has it been paired with car?

What happens when pressing the sport button?

Sport button has no difference on gearchanges , it does light up when pressed, No i havent paired the ecus to the car , I have only done this on trial and error to see if it would make any difference.
My feeling is that the guy who changed the transfer box done some thing as the car was perfect before .

You could open transfer ecu and check for burns, look at the large transistors they can burn like mine did.

Transmission ecu needs paired with car, is it the correct one?

But to stop the trail/error waste of money get it on diagnostic (as wammers says) when you run out of free checks,

You cannot alter anything on diesel ECU. They should fit all. The petrol ECU can have the adaptive values reset the diesel ECU can't

Why not? all gear boxes wear and create different patterns in the ecu:confused: Diesels don't?

Because as i just said, the petrol ECU can have adaptive values reset. The diesel one can't. It has nothing to do with wear in gearbox more driver inputs throttle demands, torque against load/engine speed for adjusting the changes etc.

Only the CAN BUS ECU on the 4.6 can have the adaptive values reset. On the diesel there is more than one version of the ECU but they all seem to plug and play.:)

The fault sounds like it's stuck in sport mode as the transfer ECU seems to work if it goes into low range and works.
Need to read the fault codes, could be a sensor and also check that the sport circuit is operating.

Correct as i said, the only ECU that can be reset is the GS887X fitted to some petrol versions. NONE of the others can be reset.
