hi all

on the weekend i changed the shoes on my rear drums. now i got them on but there rubbing on the inside of my drum, can anyone help with how i can ease the shoes off the drum please?!

thanks in advance

Ben

Take your foot off the brake :D - just de-adjust em a tad , 1/2" bolt head on the back plate . Jack her up a bit so the wheels free to spin and tweek the adjuster till the shoes almost touch the drum ( wind em right off and you'll get long pedle travel before u actually start braking .

where u say rubbing , do you mean there rubbing on the flat face of the drum and not where there spose too ??
there rubbing where there supposed to but its perminant. even right now as we speak th shoes are touching the inside of the drum. i just need to find a way to pull them back a bit. i turned the nut on the back till there as far back as they can possibley go but there still touching the drum. do i have to do some other sort of adjusting?

thanks

Ben

have yu pressed the foot pedal a couple of times to centre the shoes and did you chamfer the leading and trailing edges of the shoes?
Hi mad hat. no i not done that yet. id supose ide do it with the drum on otherwise the caliber piston would pop out. ill try this in the morning.

"chamfer the leading and trailing edges of the shoes?" <how do i go about doing this?

theers for the help by the way guys. much apreciate it

To "chamfer" the ends of your brake shoes simple rub the ends with a file (or shave them with a stanley knife) so that they have a slight angle on them - you can also do the outside edges a little as well, but it's usually only the ends that need to be done.

Once you put the drums on and really stand on the pedal HARD a few times, you will probably find that the shoes will settle into position properly and any serious rubbing will disappear - remember the drum has to be tightened a little or it might be sitting askew. Very minor rubbing is normal for new shoes until they "bed in" with a little use.

If you can turn the drums fairly easily by hand then there isn't really anything serious to worry about. If the drums are locked solid or very very stiff , then check the adjusters are working freely as they often get gummed up with gunk and although the adjusting bolt might be fully withdrawn, the actuators might be stuck in their guides.

I hope this helps.
