Hi fellas
It could be my mind playing tricks on me, but I feel that there's more noise from the drivetrain in my 4.6HSE now than when I first got it. It's road speed dependant, quieter but still there when in neutral, and seems to be coming from somewhere between middle and rear of vehicle.
I'm thinking diff, or maybe transfer box output bearing.
What sort of oil should I fill in the diffs and transfer box if I was to replace it?
Any bearings that are prone to start singing like this?
Other tips? Maybe some noise is perfectly normal....?

Help will be appreciated.

Cheers
Henrik

check props and diff flanges t/box out put bearings can be changed by removing thier respective housings and not whole t/box, check t/box oil as well while under there, even front diff noise can sound like its coming from the t/box you can check viscous unit by jacking one front wheel up putting g/box in neutral and turning wheel using wheel brace if it locks viscous is siezed

Hi
Thanks for the feedback!
So, if the noise is coming from the diff (front, rear or both), what is causing it? I guess there will be at least 3 bearings in each diff, and then the wheel bearings?
I don't suspect the wheel bearings, as it doesn't seem to be affected at all whether I'm in a turn or driving straight.
Any tips on how to locate the source so that I don't start replacing bearings at random?

Cheers,
Henrik

there are 4 brgs in diff ,usually brg behind drive flange check for play in flange you can remove each prop in turn and test drive to narrow fault with props of check output brg on t/box front /rear diffs use ep90 or equivalent t/box dextron 2 atf ,checking condition of oil can help lead you to fault

Hi
This is very helpful - now I know where to start. So, does the transfer box share its oil with the auto box, or is it a separate reservoir? Can the diff input bearings (for lack of a better word) also be changed without dismantling the whole diff?

Cheers
Henrik

Hi Henrik97

The Transferbox is a closed unit with own reservoir - there are 2 plugs - very easy to change - diffs take ep90 - buy 4L and you have some for topping up - each take 1,6L if I'm not wrong - how about the autobox - have you changed oil and filter on that recently?? That makes a world of difference!!! A bit messy but once done you'll know if something is wrong - looking at the old fluids coming out will indicate what state things are in...

So get greasy...
