Lads, I have a bit of slack taking up the drive in my 110 200TDI, no really nasty clonks or anything but you can feel it when u hit the throttle. Whats the procedure for tracking down the cause?

Its only done around 120K so I'd be surprised if its the gb output shaft. Been getting by just slipping the clutch a bit more gentle but would like to sort it if poss.

Give it a rock in gear and see if you can hear where it is coming from first.

Get under it and give the props a shake - check for play in the UJ's and at the spines (where the shaft extends/shortens).

It could also be a bush or the a frame ball joint.

It could also be the transfer input gear gearbox output shaft is worn.

at 120k i'd be suprised if the mainshaft wasnt worn! theryre not the best. we got 3 110's at work all under 4 years old all with masses of slack in the transmission. its a landy thing!

Lift one wheel off the ground and get someone to turn it back and forward while you get under and follow the movement back to the gearbox, it's probably just a combination of all the slightly loose joints. Make sure (of course) you chock properly and use a good axle stand!!
