Drivetrain Slack

I have a clunk in the drive train when changing gear. I am suspecting that it is play in the front axle. Planning on jacking the landy up this weekend and checking for slack.

Any advice on what would bethe best procedure and how much is acceptable slack in components?

I noticed the other day when I had the front end jacked up that I could turn the front prop shaft about 30 before it was turning the front wheels so am thinking this is where the problem is?

If this is the problem is it more likely to be the diff or play in the shafts?

How viable is it to rebuild the front axle?

I know a lot of ifs but am sure I am not the first person with this issue.

Going to check the rest of the drive train as well to make sure not faults elsewhere.

It is a 89 110 with only about 70k on the clock.

Any help or advise appreciated

Andy

With that low millage I suspect the A frame ball joint on the back axle mate . Chock the wheels with the hand brake off and out of geaar and get a nice bar on that ball joint ( should be no movement at all ) .
as for the propshaft slack you will get a bit due to possible wear in the hub drive flanges ( under the rubber boots ) and the diff and transfer box diff .

But my moneys on the A frame ball joint or UJs - there common for cluncks when taking up drive / changing gear . check you UJs for any ware - should be no movement in them rotational or up and down .

If you dont know how to check UJs , ( soz if you know ) grab the drive flange with one hand and the prop with the other and try and twist in opposite directions , also push up and pull down on the prop - any movement = fooked UJ ( but a bit on the sliding part is ok ) .
If the flange is moving then its an input/output bearing .

Thanks Sypher

The a frame ball joint is not one I thought to check. Will belooking tomorrow so will let you know the outcome

Cheers

The rear diff in my 110 was knackered, I found a new axle with almost no play for £100 so it might be worth looking for a good axle rather than rebuilding yours

You were right sypher - The a bar ball joint is well knackered. A new one is on order as we speak.
