Hi Fellow Landy members,

Looking for some guidance. I have been advised to replace Drive shaft CV boot which has split on offside front. Given the fact it's a fairly small part and labour costs very high, is it worth sourcing part from land rover parts specialists and getting it fitted by a non-landy garage? Thanks

I don't know about in the UK, but here many garages will only fit parts that they have supplied.
Island 4 x 4 are a good source of parts if you are able to DIY.
 
If you supply the part and it fails, no come back
They supply it then you gave a case to argue.
Get a decent quality part fitted, you don't want to pay to get it done again.
Get it done soon before all the grease escapes and the dirt gets in, or it will cost even more.
Any mechanic should be able to do it.
How much does it cost, out of interest?

Any independent landy garage round you? It'll be bread and butter to them

After further inspection a landy specialist has suggested to replace Cv joint as the boots are more difficult to fit onto existing one (may come off) and it’s only an extra £100 to do this. Quoted £365 including vat for Cv joint offside front with boot. Cv boot alone is £273 from another garage. Labour as mentioned main cost. What do you think? Thanks. B

Sounds pretty good to me.
 
And doing it yourself will mean getting hold of a 450nm torque wrench. And a few other bits and pieces

Doing it yourself is a world of pain waiting, unless you have a FULLY equiped set up...usually they havebeen on so long they require massive effort to move, if you have a garage you trust or one that is highly recommended by a friend that is the best way to go ...unless you have a huge amount of time on your hands and a willing assistant± Good luck!

Bread and butter? When @My Old Landy took @biketeacherdave old P38 to a local garage they refused to do the swivel ball joints as they didn’t want it stuck on a ramp. CV boot (similar tear down) is a simple job if the neighbouring parts aren’t welded together. Just do it yourself ;) Ironically I nicked the cv boot removing the driveshaft so I’ve got all to do again 🤪

Absolutely, it really annoyed me to the extent we now go to a different garage for servicing and MOT etc.
Being disabled means you have to rely on garages or you have to sell :(

I've got 3 good uns by me that **** this kind of thing before breakfast 😜

My son found a local garage who were willing to do his D2 ball joints. Couple of months down the line I noticed the cv boot needed changing. On inspection I think they must have nicked it bolting the hub back on. Easy done I guess as it's quite tight getting a ratchet in there.
