Hi all,
Last night I was driving home after meeting up with a couple members of landyzone, and as was driving up a steep hill near my house in my defender 90(200tdi 1992) I heard a thud and I had no drive, so I presumed It had jumped out of high box. However I could not move in either hi or low box when I put it back in and will only move with diff lock on. When I put it into hi box without diff lock the front prop shaft just spins and the wheels don't move and the rear prop doesn't do anything. Any ideas on what it could be? Thanks a lot

From threads i've read on here previously it sounds like the front half-shaft gone. but I stand to be corrected by the experienced guys on here.
Have you tried doing a search? :)

Hi,
Yes I've done a search but haven't found an exact answer, but I also think it sounds like a half shaft from what i have read but can't understand why the rear prop shaft isn't turning. Cheers

Yes front half shaft OR diff broken or drive flange.
The reason the rear prop don't move is because it will spin the easier wheel and when in diff-lock it turns front and rear the same

Wasn't being funny by the way when I said about doing a search! I haven't got the knowledge myself to take the **** out of anyone else!;)

Ahh yes I get you, and just had a look with a mate who had the same problem and his was the half shaft but I'll take it out tomorrow and think I'll start with the longer side first as I can't tell which side it is. Thanks for help

Just took both half shafts out and they were as good as new. Can anyone help me with what to next to try to identify what is wrong? I may be wrong but presume its something to do the diff.cheers

diff ,if drive members splines are good and cvs

When I had the shafts out I could turn the front prop and see the cog that turns the shafts spinning however when I put the half shafts back on the prop won't turn the hubs.i would suspect that it's the shaft that's in the hub on one side but i can't see why neither wheel turns the prop.

there are 3 outlets on a diff 2 x wheels and prop flange ,one needs to be held for either of the other 2 to turn each other,ie if you jack one wheel off the ground with other on the floor turning jacked up wheel will turn prop if nothing broken ,with 2 wheels jacked up turning one wheel will either turn the other wheel or prop which ever is easiest

Thanks James, I've already tried all of the above tho,so might take the diff cover off tomorrow and have a look in there ,I've already drained the oil and cannot see anything in it, ie bits of metal.
