Drive clonking

Hi, new member here, wonder if someone can advise me please.

I have a 2000 X reg 1.8 gs freelander with 55,000 miles and 1 head gasket done.
When I pull away, in 1st or 2nd gear there is a clonking noise from the rear of the car when the drive is taken up. Generally the faster the pull away the more likely the clonk. If you are particulary smooth with the clutch you can pull away with no noise at all.

I'm guessing at propshaft rubber or driveshaft wear, anyone else had this?
And is it hugely expensive?

I keep thinking of selling the car but I do kinda like the old bus and the trade in prices are eye wateringly low, but theres always that nagging fear of further H/g failure.

Any suggestions much appreciated.

It is possible that the rear subframe has come loose. There are threads on here telling you how to check for and fix it.

Just looked up that thread, doesnt sound like my problem, I have no metallic sounds or creaking or wallowing on the handling side. Just a dull thud/ clonk on drive take up, nothing in reverse or higher gears.

Could be a diff mount has gone.

Second that. Just done one of mine. The front mount's the worst offender. A set of 3's about 50 quid, or you can have the original rubbers replaced with poly bushes, which I now wish I'd done.

There's a black shield above the prop where it enters the rear diff. If you crawl under there and take a look, you may find scrape marks from where the prop is coming into contact with the guard. If there's marking, the diff nose mount is shot.

almost certain to be the front mount on the rear diff, replace with genuine land rover, it will last the longest

Thanks all. I have the exact same CLUNK and I suspected as much.

I have the same noise on my 02 freelander. Had a look underneath can't see any scrapes but how much movement should there be on the rear diff

sounds exactly like my 2001 td4, just had the diff mount changed and its like new. Not expensive at all.

there should be no movement on rear diff, firmly rubber mounted all the way

Diff front mounting is very easy to replace, check this thread
