hey guys

i recently bought a 1995 p38 4.6 hse which has been converted to springs. its a lovely car and having owned one which was riding on air before i can tell the difference and appriciate that on air they are alot better.........if case anyone was wondering that was me asking nicely not to bombarded with its ruined, put it back to air bags etc replies. im after some help and advise not being told ive ruined the car lol.

the car is mainly going to be used to and from work(40mile round trip on motorway and town), driving around the quarry or earthworks site and back and for to horsey shows towing a horse box etc when the misses and kids ask me 500 times and i give in and take them.

questions are as follows:

1. i want to put some 31" tyres on it(cooper stt pros, i have these on my discovery 1 300tdi) the measurement from center or hub/rim to the wheel arch is 445mm. im going to take that as the springs have been set up to motorway EAS setting. will 31" (265/75R16) fil with this set up?

2. is there a different spring i can put in the car to lift it another 1-2 inchs, taking it from 445 motorway height to wading height of 510mm? if so what am i looking for as in a kit etc?

many thanks in advance.

i never played with my previous p38 as have always used discoverys to mess in the mud so am a novice when it comes to upgrades for it. i take it parts for a d1/2 RRC , springs etc wont be any good for this model?

Sacrilege i tell ya!

The Range rover is perfectly capable offroader, ya don't need giant wheels to drive across a field or even green lanes..

My P38 could handle muddy fields with ease, and shes sat on a set of Old bald Nexen rodians stock 18"

so the only reason it being illegal is the speedo? that could be overcome by using my digital gps speedo fixed to the dash?

i have seen plenty of D1s and D2s driving round the gloucester area with oversized off road tyres.

the difference between whats on there now and what i want is as follows

265/75 R16 = 31.9" STT pros
255/70 R16= 30.28" Tyres on there at the moment
245/75 R16 = 30.70" STT pros maybe a better size to keep the speedo nearer the standard size?

Your speedo would be illegal. Although there is a provision on Nanocom to change the drive percentage, but never done it, so it maybe a pita to get right.

I seem to remember a thread about that. I think the consensus was that it only changed the speedo output for diagnostic purposes but didn't actually work in the real world? Might be wrong but that was the gist of the discussion.

You can almost certainly get different springs. Don't know about springs but there was a guy at a Landyzone meet a few years ago with oversize tyres on a P38. Reckon your tyres are a similar size or smaller. @300bhp/ton might have experience of oversize tyres and springs.

I’ve been looking at terrafirma spring kits and the do a 1” lift kit but that would only take me to standard ride height that is 470mm.

The speedo is out by 5% at 265/75 and 1.4% at 245/75 so not that bad really.

I don’t know much about the coil spring conversions. If the spring is the same size as other Land Rover springs. Then you have a lot of choice of lengths and spring rates.

Failing that I’m sure you could fab up a 1-2” spacer kit if really needed.

That said, I think you may struggle with a 265/75 they are over 31” tall. It certainly isn’t impossible but I think you’ll find they will rub in places. You may also want some wider offset rims. But not too wide else they will be sticking out of the arches.

Let me check what size and rims I’m running. I can’t recall off the top of my head. Although mine is on air.

Right they are a 255/70R16. So quite a bit smaller than a 265/75R16.

Rims are 16x8 I forget the exact ET. But they are about 10mm wider offset. I think you would potentially struggle to fit anything bigger without more serious mods.
