hello,
i have recently bought a land rover series 3 21/4L petrol and i am wanting to learn how to look to after her properlly.
i was wondering how to drain and refill the coolant and any online documents or videos that could help in guiding me how to this.

Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

The first thing is not to use either the drain tap on the cylinder or the drain tap on the radiator bottom unless you are absolutely certain they are free and will turn. Shearing eaither of them off changes a simple job into a long expensive one. The cylinder ones are usually blocked so nothing comes out and the rad ones have a habit of pulling out of the rad leaving a big hole. Safest way is to loosen the bottom hose and drain it from there.

Take a look at the hoses, if they are old it would be worth changing them. Open the heater circuit before draining to get all the old cool and out, when it's empty, use a garden hose to flush through. Refill the radiator slowly and when the coolant is just above the plates in the radiator, start the engine and top up the rad as necessary. The correct level is about a quarter of an inch above the plate in the rad. A Haynes manual is better than nothing but search eBay for the green book. Good luck.

Here's a write up of how I do it. Basically a long winded description of the above from Col. Follow this link here for the write-up. This is for the 2.25d, but is the same for the petrol version.

Please note that I have an original rad that does have a drain pug and that the drain plug does move within it, so I always use that. However, take note of what Rob says aboave about being careful in the use of the drain plugs.
